When NX launches (assuming 2016) PS4 will have 50+ million userbase and Xbox One will probably have 25 million userbase. I just dont see how Nintendo attracts third party in their systems. If they somehow fails to launch NX successfully then they are pretty much in deep problem.

I don't believe that the Nintendo needs to beat Sony or Microsoft with the NX, they just need to turn the ship around (which could be as simple as just selling 30 million units like the N64 days).  The new concept of the NX also doesn't have to something as crazy as the WiiMote.  Nintendo just needs to offer something that isn't being done by the other console makers and price the NX so that it can comfortably be a gamer's 2nd or 3rd console this gen.  I really think that, if executed properly, something as simple as the fusion concept could easily do this for Nintendo.

Pretty words that is beautiful as a forum text. If NX is getting any game that is coming in PS4 / Xbox One they are competing with Sony / Microsoft. Simple.

I really don't see why Nintendo need to dominate to be satisfied.

They would probably just start supporting whatever consoles Sony and Microsoft have out. Mobile support depends on whether or not their handheld line stays popular but personally I hope Nintendo never fully embrace mobile

That's completely over simplifying things. He mentioned, the fusion/unified concept of the handheld and console sharing a library so the majority of third party support likely won't come from the same type of games that PS/XB receive, it will most likely be the unification of the type of games 3DS & Wii U recieve. So we would be looking at 100% of Nintendo's support, strong Japanese support, strong indie support, strong kid/family friendly support, with any mainstream western support being a bonus. So just because they may share some of the same games as PS/XB doesn't necessarily mean they are in direct competition.

Well that's the trick isn't it? It's not so easy to come up with ideas like that. It's sort of like seeing a gorgeous girl across the room and saying "well I just need something great to say so I can walk over there". Nintendo didn't even invent the Wiimote, it fell into their lap because the inventor of the device was turned down by Sony and MS, but Nintendo was not his first (or even second) choice.

Well like he said, it doesn't need to be nearly as successful as Wii Remote in order to be successful.

I agree.  Competing with the PS/XB means catering to the same audiences and having largely the same gaming libraries (with even 1st party exclusives targeting the same genres/audiences).   If Nintendo's 1st party titles largely consisted of M-Rated shooters, cinematic games and narrative-driven games -- and all three of which emphasized graphics, lavish set-pieces and voice acting with huge marketing campaigns -- then I'd agree they're competing directly with Sony and Microsoft.  The closest game in Nintendo's IP library that fits those categories is Metroid and Nintendo largely doesn't like making new games for it because the Japanese market doesn't care much for it.

That being said, I'd still like Nintendo to make an honest attempt at courting that audience as a side project if only to diversify their software library and help create a demand for western 3rd party games on Nintendo platforms.  That and I'd love a new (good) Metroid game.

They don't need to dominate, but as long as they do well enough, it should be good for them to continue in the hardware section..

It will do well. I do not mobile gaming to be a thing. Nintendo is special for the handhelds it has...

If Nintendo doesn't comeback we all commit public sudoku.

mobile /3rd party desires thread, that's basically the amount of health we are going to get in terms of Nintendo's future discussion and that is all we are ever going to come up with, especially when we have a firm grasp on the "they have to topple the leader or die" mentality.

I'm going to wait and see how their NX releases go before I think of what is the likely outcome.
