Forums - Sony - Palmer Luckey; PSVR not as "high end" as Rift.

Which VR headset do you plan on buying?

Oculus Rift 13 4.13%

HTC Vive 9 2.86%

PSVR 197 62.54%

Undecided but will probably buy one 31 9.84%

Undecided but probably won't buy one 13 4.13%

Won't be buying a VR headset 52 16.51%

Total:315

He's right, PSVR is never going to be able to compete with Oculus on a high end gaming rig. People bitch about price of the OR but it's first gen tech. Every new tech has to go through the expensive stage.

Having thought about it more, if Sony manage to get the basic kit (Headset and camera) out for less than $400 it'll be a huge achievement

Yeah... unlike these idiots at Rift, Sony has actually been witness to over 20 years of other companies failings. Hell, even THEY fucked up with the $600.00 PS3 launch price. There's no way in hell they're stupid enough to do it again.

Did you actually say something in Sony's favor? Wow....

Is that shocking or something?

Eh -- this is only partially true. The OR has a screen per eye and at a resolution that's about 12% higher.

However, the OR also is a peripheral device for the PC rather than an actual platform. They make ALL their money on hardware sales and therefore OR will run with higher margins (same problem with Steam Box).

The PSVR will be probably be $299-399 vs OR @ $599. It will be $100 cheaper off the git go, just because of the platform royalties Sony expects to recoup on software. An additional $100-200 will be based on actual components (Sony can buy components cheaper too.... don't forget they are a longtime hardware manufacturer).

Sony will only get more royalties if they sell to people who otherwise weren't going to purchase a ps4.  I already have a ps4, I already buy many games for it and i already pay for psn plus. Once I buy a PSVR (which i plan to pre-order) I'm not likely going to start spending more money on games then i was before. I already buy plenty.  I'll just be more selective when purchasing non vr games then before becuase I'll be buying vr games as well. With Oculus all the money they make off selling games in their store is new money.

It doesn't matter if someone buys the game just for the PS4 or buys it for the PSVR -- they get platform royalties. If they sell the hardware at cost -- it will be a net win either way.  Keep in mind that Sony pictures will start producing VR experiences in addition to the actual games soon enough.

If they establish a foothold in VR (and its successful) they can have another leg up on both Xbox and Nintendo), and if they can beat the competition this could be a nother bluray vs HDDVD situation.

Long term it's a wise move for Sony but I think it also comes with caveats.  In the near terms they may lose money on the venture if they sell psvr at let's say a 50 to 100 dollar loss. Wheras with Oculus if they sell oculus at a 50 to 100 dollar loss they will make that money back quickly with the sale of vr games. Like I said I'd be buying games on ps4 regardless of buying the headset. But in the long run you're  right sony can be a leader in vr and they will likely sell even more ps4's as a result of the venture and having the best value proposition in high end vr.  At the same time though there will be a lot of people who are against VR who might want to move away from PS4 to Xbone or NX if they feel Sony is making less first party games for the tv console experience.   Similar to those who moved away from Nintendo because they didn't like gimmicky motion party type of games despite the existance of many great first party games which were not gimmicky or party games on the wii.

Think of it like an apartment.

Order one of the apartments at the top for the best experience possible. Sure, more cash needed, but there are more features(and you decide if it's worth it.

Or, just get one of the regular apartments. May not be as beautiful as the best ones you can get, but you still have the features that makes it nice,

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

Where is the Samsung Gear VR on the list?

At this time I would probably go with the Occulus Riff, but I would need to upgrade my computer. So not in any real big hurry.

But from what I have tried, it would be really great for some games.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

As far as I'm aware, OR is a device and not a platform. OR does not get royalties from software.... you have it backwards.

So the creator of Rift say after the big price on his device, that is so expensive because he use pc and that make it hi end comper to ps4 vr hahahahhaha (i say facebook) Can anyone tell me one hi and game for oculus? most games from both device is simulation of somenthing like climbing or run and most is indies.

I said VR is for youtubers to mess around and makes fun screams is nothing alse. if psvr is 400$ price all the vr bs is going to and faster than kinect 2
Perfect price for VR is 150$ and bundle with ps4 and games at 400$

could someone please clarify this for me:

Will the Sony VR only be compatinle with the PS4?

Will the Oculus Rift only work on PC?

Is there a VR in development for the Xbox1?

After watching some people play Alien: Isolation with a VR headset I'm pretty excited... Not sure which I like most yet as I'm torn between the PC and Sony's claim of tons of games being already in development.

Yes.

Yes.

Maybe? But it's not anything that's been announced yet, and it would be tough to make it work if there was.

If you can't decide on which to go with, a good place to start would be seeing if your PC can run the Rift.

About halfway down you'll see something that says "Oculus Compatibility Tool" you can download it and it will tell you if your PC will work.

Overall, I think Oculus will see faster support for non gaming aspects of VR and will evolve faster than PSVR will. But, it will also be more expensive and I expect Sonys exclusives to be better.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Thanks a bunch!

Yeah, I agree with your hunch. I suspect in the long turn I'll probably wind up getting both, I'm just deciding which to get first at the moment. My PC is at the low end of the recommended specs but I built it 5 years ago and have been planning an upgrade. Think I'll just look at the early library and decide based on that for now.
