Eh -- this is only partially true. The OR has a screen per eye and at a resolution that's about 12% higher. However, the OR also is a peripheral device for the PC rather than an actual platform. They make ALL their money on hardware sales and therefore OR will run with higher margins (same problem with Steam Box). The PSVR will be probably be $299-399 vs OR @ $599. It will be $100 cheaper off the git go, just because of the platform royalties Sony expects to recoup on software. An additional $100-200 will be based on actual components (Sony can buy components cheaper too.... don't forget they are a longtime hardware manufacturer).

Sony will only get more royalties if they sell to people who otherwise weren't going to purchase a ps4. I already have a ps4, I already buy many games for it and i already pay for psn plus. Once I buy a PSVR (which i plan to pre-order) I'm not likely going to start spending more money on games then i was before. I already buy plenty. I'll just be more selective when purchasing non vr games then before becuase I'll be buying vr games as well. With Oculus all the money they make off selling games in their store is new money.

It doesn't matter if someone buys the game just for the PS4 or buys it for the PSVR -- they get platform royalties. If they sell the hardware at cost -- it will be a net win either way. Keep in mind that Sony pictures will start producing VR experiences in addition to the actual games soon enough.
If they establish a foothold in VR (and its successful) they can have another leg up on both Xbox and Nintendo), and if they can beat the competition this could be a nother bluray vs HDDVD situation.

Long term it's a wise move for Sony but I think it also comes with caveats. In the near terms they may lose money on the venture if they sell psvr at let's say a 50 to 100 dollar loss. Wheras with Oculus if they sell oculus at a 50 to 100 dollar loss they will make that money back quickly with the sale of vr games. Like I said I'd be buying games on ps4 regardless of buying the headset. But in the long run you're right sony can be a leader in vr and they will likely sell even more ps4's as a result of the venture and having the best value proposition in high end vr. At the same time though there will be a lot of people who are against VR who might want to move away from PS4 to Xbone or NX if they feel Sony is making less first party games for the tv console experience. Similar to those who moved away from Nintendo because they didn't like gimmicky motion party type of games despite the existance of many great first party games which were not gimmicky or party games on the wii.

As far as I'm aware, OR is a device and not a platform. OR does not get royalties from software.... you have it backwards.
