I think it could be more of the size of a tablet, smartphones are much smaller than even a 3DS XL in overall volume, there's no reason it has to have a very small battery. Batteries are cheap too so there's that.

One would hope that it has at least 6-7 hours of battery life. I feel like a long trainride/flight should be the minimum requirement for a handheld. More would be appreciated.

Even after two years of heavy use, I still get around 6 hours out of my 3DSXL before the red light comes on, similar battery life would be great, so they'd have to upgrade obviously, so I'm guessing around the 2500mAh mark.
