While this is certainly a great achievement for Sony and lots of good games are coming to the system, which is good for people who have bought it, in wich way is it great for the entire video game industry?

I'm not saying that it isn't, but I was expecting to read in what ways the entire industry benefitted from Sonys success.

All I got was a raving celebration of Sony. Wich is fine, but the thread title is slightly misleading.

I also would like to read about it.

Sounds interesting right? Unfortunately I have no Idea in what ways the industry as a whole benefits from sonys success, or I would make a thread like that myself! :P

It shows health. Them doing good keeps games pumping out, which helps everyone. We've not heard solid numbers from Microsoft about the X1, but clearly, they're doing good enough to remain in it. That's how the gamers benefit.

So, this is more about how good is for the industry to have consoles with great sales, rather than Sony as the leader is good for the industry.

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Number ONE Zelda fan in the Universe

DKCTF didn't move consoles

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

None of those started while a PS system was dominating as the market leader.
Actually it became the trend last gen when most of the time the PS3 in the last place, when Sony stopped being the leader.
So I'm not sure where it's coming from as it doesn't stand for what you were claiming in the post I quoted before.
That was: "I think Sony as the leader means that the industry can get away with more anti-consumer practices"

Well, most third parties considered PS3 and 360 as one, so in that sense Sony was still the market leader. Also, the PS3 received more high-profile games than any other console in that generation, so in the context of how third parties treated the available systems, Sony was still the market leader. Additionally, I didn't exclude Microsoft in my initial post.

But the real point is that things aren't going to get better for gamers. That in turn is good for the industry.

When you think about it, the competition between PlayStation and Xbox isn't all that beneficial for gamers. They merely get to pick the lesser evil between the two, but the whole thing is run more like a duopoly where companies instead of consumers dictate the shape of products. Quick example: Proper competition would have made Microsoft offer a basic free online multiplayer package as an alternative to Xbox Live Gold; what happened instead is that Sony made PS+ mandatory for online multiplayer. The industry is certainly not complaining about that, because the big third parties probably receive benefits for driving adoption of the mandatory subscriptions for online interactions.

Great post. Spot on.

Great for the industry is not great for gamers. The last two gens have not been great for gamers in terms of value. I don't care frankly, it doesn't bother me... but what Role is saying is correct.

Of course it's beneficial for gamers. A well selling playstationplattform is a guarantor for a wide spectrum of genres and creative games, since Sony isn't shying away from funding new concepts, expanding and open up new studios.

In comparison, what did Microsoft do with the success of the Xbox 360?!

Do you honestly believe that bad sales would have the same effect and bring the same quality and quantity of games?

Hunting Season is done...

For people talking about the records, it's breaking some indeed, as it's outselling the PS2, Sony most successful and fast selling system.
Even though the Wii sold faster (and died faster as well), Sony is breaking their own records.

People have to realize that the term "Legs" also aplies to Consoles, not just games.

Nope, we dictate the industry with what we buy.

Our buying habits forced Sony into a 399 launch price with the PS4 after the PS3, we forced MS a mega corporation to entirely back track on their products design and business plan to do what we want.  And we forced them to drop the kinetic.

We forced our wants and wishes on both Sony and MS to do what we want.  Duopoly, is that a joke ?
