^^^This, also Halo 4 back then was also discounted during the holidays even though it was selling amazingly well. He obviously has no idea what's he talking about LOL.

Yes, and? Do you even understand what I'm talking about?

So, Black Ops 3 and Battlefront were discounted, so the TR discounts didn't affect the game's "amazing" sales and profitability?

Wut?

You seem to misunderstood, but I will let you figure it out.

Or Square already got their pockets full with the MS deal and they didn't need a sales deadline for Tomb Raider this time. The question that remains, considering the game sold over one million units, is if it was profitable for Microsoft.

highly unlikely square got paid enough to make this game profitable for them after just 1 million in sales if all MS gets in return is just 3 month's total exclusivity and 1 year console exclusivity. If Square wanted to be profitable at 1 million in sales they would have needed to give MS permanent Xbox exclusivity. Not being profitable at 4 million in sales for the reboot means what, a cost to market of $180 million?  MS paid Square $140 million odd for a piddling 3 month's full exclusivity? I don't think so. MS might have money to throw around, but the execs aren't stupid with money. An investment still needs to at least theoretically make a financial case. And considering MS needed to go to considerable lengths to keep holiday sales flat year on year instead of down, for MS it seems like paying Square $50 million for this exclusivity deal would be financially questionable.

So I think a more realistic assumption is that MS optimistically hoped for about 3 million in game sales on Xbox, and MS paid Square the balance between 3 million in sales and break even. Which is probably about 2 million in sales. What that does is make Pc and PS 4 sales almost purely profit as long as Xbox sales reaches about 3 million, which it could possibly achieve wishbone decent start it's had.

I really wish we could know what Square was paid for this deal or just what deals like this are worth in general.

I think you and WoodenPints misunderstood actually. I said :

-TR launch was a failure (not even in NPD, behind Just Dance...).

-TR was discounted in December (so, after the failed launch chronologically, not a cause/effect judgment).

-The discounts of this Christmas season surely gave a good boost to the game sales, maybe at the expense of the game's profitability.

-Ms announce "okay" sales numbers, nothing good.

So, can you explain how are the Battlefront or Halo 4 discounts relevant here?

I think his logic is that since Black Ops 3 and Battlefront were also on sale during Black Friday, and elsewhere during the holiday season, that this somehow means that TR sales aren't actually so bad, or that the sale prices are as much of a non-factor in TR's sales as they on on BLOPS3 or SWBF.

However, this completely ignores the fact that of course Black Ops 3 sold over 4.5 million copies on X1 and Star Wars: Battlefront sold over 2 million copies on X1, and neither of those are a) exclusives, or b) better experiences on X1 than they are on PS4 or PC. So personally, I don't really see how this is in any way makes Tomb Raider's sales look better. If anything, they make it look worse.

well, it's better than I thought so in the end, it's good for the franchise, still over 1m in the holiday period on 2 consoles isn't impressive IMO. Maybe it will have legs, maybe it won't but still, this is the kind of games that I really doubt over 1m is enough to be profitable so that check SE got better be big enough. Now that the PC version is close, the sales is going to be much better which mean the franchise can be save.

Honestly, those who really want this game to fail are only the selected few. Because it only makes sense that the more successful Tomb Raider is on its current Xbox offerings will only help it be more successful on the PS4. The more money this games makes, the more money SquareEnix can potentially pump into the PS4 version. And that can only be a good thing, right?

That's not how these things work. In fact the PS4 may have been the primary development platform and development on the game could have been completed when the X1 version was released. It could just be sitting there, waiting for the X1 exclusivity contract to expire before it's sent to Sony for certification. We're not sure. If that was the case, the only work that would need to be done over the next year was ensuring that any bug fixes that were made over the release of the X1 game were applied to the PS4 build as well.

Even if that is not the case (I'm not sure how likely the above scenario is), I highly doubt the budget for the PS4 port is affected in any way by Xbox One sales. Square Enix is a major publisher with many revenue streams. They're not waiting on money to roll in from this game before they can afford to work on the PS4 version, nor would they pour extra money into enhancing the PS4 version. That wouldn't make any sense to add all of these additional features or enhancements to just one platform. If there is going to be any enhancements or additional content for the PS4 version, it'll likely be no more than including DLC in some kind of "Game of the Year" edition for the PS4 on release, similar to how the PS4 and X1 versions of Tomb Raider were the "definitive edition"s. This version might also get published on X1 when the PS4 version releases. Again, this would not be affected by X1 edition sales, as Square Enix is trying to maximize the revenue in releasing a year old game on a new platform. If they want to sell the game at a new game price then they will have to add additional content on top of the "base" X1 version.

Too many "what ifs" in your argument.  So you don't know it things work in this case.

So, can you explain how are the Battlefront or Halo 4 discounts relevant here?

1.  why was it a failure.  What were you expecting.  Do you think MS thought it was going to sell 2mil+ by 2016? Why would you think that?

2. What discounts be specific.  Does Uncharted collection going bundled for $299 not count as a sold game?  It was given away for free after all.

3. Yes it was okay. nothing good nor bad.

Between the two consoles? I'll say that's slightly bad almost okay. Whatever it is I can guarantee Square will not be doing this again. The backlash they received followed by the sales can't possibly have made this worth it. I'm sure any other company is going to be very hesitant of making any deals like this with MS as well.
