3DS certainly wasn't a massive leap over PSP.

What's the actual power difference between the PSP and the 3DS?

psp has around two thirds of a ps2 power. 3ds is between gamecube and wii, and we know gamecube is clearly ahead of ps2.

Heh. How is the NX going to handle games like Dragon Quest XI and Final Fantasy XV if it's only a modest leap over the WiiU, a console that is very weak to begin with?

How do most PS3/360 handle the majority of PS4/XB1 games? How do Vita & PS4 share so many games? How did 3DS get a port of a PS3/360 game at launch?

Metal Gear Solid V is one of the most impressive PS4 games in terms of size, scope, visuals yet it's able to run fine on decade old hardware that is less than 1/10th as powerful. Most game engines are very scalable.

You think ps4 is more than 10x more powerfull than ps3?

That's impossible.

To the OP, he says a lot of things that are obvious. Of course the next handheld will be more powerfull. Before the mobile boom, the natural progression would lead to specs around ps360. Since the mobile growth increased demand for portable specs, the 3ds successor should be somewhat more powerfull than a ps3 or x360. 250-300 gflops gpu, 2 gb of ram, better cpu and access to the most up to date open gl, shader model... All for $199 at launch. Just forget a 1080p screen, 720 is more reasonable. I also think the 3d is cheap (and stable) enough that they will keep it forever.

Not even that. Bioshock is was probably the most demanding game on iOS. Even on an iPhone 6 or 6s it couldn't compete with the 360-version:

We'll probably never know how it runs on an iPhone 6S (because it is incompatible to iOS9).

Does anyone of you know another Android or iOS game which could be on 360/PS3 level? I would gladly try it out. The Android version of Half-Life 2 is unfortunately Nvidia exclusive. :(

The most impressive Benchmark demos on mobile devices so far are Car Chase (GFX Bench, Open GL ES 3.1) and Sling Shot (3DMark, OpenGL ES 3.0) that are on 360/PS3 level.

Here is a short video of Car Chase on my Xperia Z5 compact... whooping 13 fps in 720p, 6 fps in 1080p:

The fastest Android devices under 7'' reach ~10 fps in 1080p, that would be ~20 fps in 720p, not enough for smooth gameplay on 360/PS3 fidelity. (iOS devices can't handle the car chase demo yet):

I would more expect the NX-handheld to handle games in the graphic quality of the T-Rex demo (GFX Bench, Open GL ES 2.0), which would already be a quantum leap from the 3DS graphics:

Ya handheld will probably be somewhere between Vita & 360 which would probably allow it to handle 360-Wii U level visuals on a small screen with a lower resolution similar to how 3DS is able to handle PS2-Wii level visuals. Since 3DS/N3DS can handle ports of some of the most impressive PS2/Wii games like Metal Gear Solid 3, Dragon Quest VIII, Monster Hunter Tri, Xenoblade Chronicles, than I think it would be realistic for NX handheld to be able to handle the majority of 360/Wii U games.

Ya so that makes it a moderate leap, nothing gigantic, basically the difference between PS2 & GC or Wii.

Yes, because it is

Oficial data says it's a little less than 9x.

360 visuals aren't in the same level as Wii U's. A handheld in the near future costing $199 can achieve slightly downgraded wii u visuals at 540p or VERY downgraded wii u visuals (ps360 level) at 720p.

Semantics, I threw out a ballpark number.

Sony's Playstation Vita proved once and for all that powerful hardware is essential in the fight against the growing smartphone market. Nintendo would be foolish not to follow their lead.

Haha! Win!

The 3DS and the Vita actually proved the opposite OP. Handhelds won't be able to survive if they are priced at 300 or more. "No one" is willing to pay more than 250 for a portable these days. So, the power will be what can be done to fit that constriction.

Looking at the tech that was crammed into a nexus 7 2 years ago with a 1080 display, there is no excuse for a sluggish handheld this time around.

You can get full windows 10 tablet PCs for under £130 now with 2gb RAM etc. They should be able to put out something a good notch above the Vita with 720p display for under $200 now.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

The 3ds wasnt really weak when it first came out. It was in the middle. Also, they like creating new ways to play. The only way they could male your devise is if they didnt include any unique feature (3d), amd then it would fail just like every other "hardcore handheld ( vita, shiel, etc). The nintendo handheld series sell well because nintendo innovates.

Genuiely not sure if serious. You think that 3ds did well because of 3d? Like for real?

Had it not been for certain franchises (Mario, Mario Kart, Monster Hunter, Pokemon, etc), it would have flopped big time.
