Retro is massively overrated.
The only thing significant Retro ever released was Metroid Prime, and that is ancient history, no one who worked on Metroid Prime is even still at Retro. Let's be real, Metroid Prime is a prime example of an overrated game.
Monolithsoft was developing multiple Xenosaga games, which are way better than Metroid Prime. Then they did Xenoblade, then they did Xenoblade X. They also worked on 2 Zelda games, Disaster DoC, Animal Crossing NL, 2 Baten Kaitos games, Splatoon, Pikmin, and other games.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
Not a chance.
Retro needs to be given a chance to actually branch out and do their own thing, make their own IPs. But otherwise, pretty much everything they've done for Nintendo thus far has been golden. There's little reason to think that whatever top secret project(s) they've been working on for the last couple years will wind up any less.

Really kind of puts shit in perspective I'd say. You didn't even get into how each of the companies were able to utilize the gamepad. ;) |
That's really a moot point. Yes XCX is gorgeous. But Tropical Freeze was a very pretty game as well, for it's cartoony style. There was an aweful lot going on in those levels, and even Retro themselves said the engine for that game was more advanced than anything they'd done so far.
I have no doubt that if whatever they're developed WERE to come out for Wii U (most likely not at this juncture but who knows), that it could quite possibly blow XCX out of the water graphically.
Monolith needs to be recognized for the great work they've done for Nintendo so far. But let's be real. Retro Studios, while they need to be expanded and allowed to make more than one game at a time (which I swore Nintendo said they had already done), they have come up big for Nintendo time and time again. Whatever they come out with next will most likely have people buzzing yet again. And it's really not a competition. Both studios do really fantastic work.

It wouldn't be terribly difficult to blow XCX out of the water from a graphical standpoint; textures take forever to load in when arriving at a new place (particularly when driving either in or out of New LA), and enemies will frequently simply pop in just as you pass them, especially once you've got your Skell. I think his point was more referencing how big of a world Xenoblade X has, and how something like that really pushes the limits of what can be done on the Wii U (or any console, really).

True, and I'll bring up that Donkey Kong's utilization of the gamepad looked like this

While Xenoblade X's looked like this

They both release one game every 100 years... So I tend to prefer studios that actually make games, like Intelligent System or partners like Platinum games (lol).
In the case of Monolith Soft, I can actually see why, since Xenoblade Chronicles X is huge, but Retro Studios? They only made freakin' Donkey Kong... Are they dead or what?

I think people's problem with Retro is their lack of ambition right now. Cause remember, they ASKED for DK. They weren't *told* to do DK. Trust me, Retro can do mostly what they want since every game they've made has been critically successful and financially profitable. We can't know if they have any new IP ambitions or what but we haven't seen any evidence of them being creatively tied down. Meanwhile Monolith Soft took the Wii and Wii U to their absolute extreme, pushing for the biggest worlds with comblex mechanics and in the Wii U's case unique uses of the hardware. Now I'm not saying that a game needs to be a genre defining game like Metroid Prime or massive ambitious creation like Xenoblade Chronicles X to be a very well made game. But ambition and scale does count for something and those are things Retro hasn't had since Metroid Prime 3.
But yes, people should give it time. I mean, if this E3 Retro announces Metroid Prime 4 (or just Metroid 5, a sequel to Fusion in the Prime style), that would rightfully even the odds. But more importantly, people should stop arguing over who's the best cause it's silly. Their both truly exceptional first party companies.

Tbh, I'd rather X's looked more like Tropical Freeze's. There are few things more immersion breaking than having to consistently look away from the TV every time I want to fast travel, which is a bit of a problem in a game as large as X.
