HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
One Huntsville family got a big surprise this morning, but it wasn't the kind of surprise anyone wants to get. The family realized someone had tampered with a WII U box and switched out the WII for a PlayStation and an empty Amazon box.
The tree was decorated, the stockings were hung by the chimney with care and Santa brought exactly what Daevon had asked for.
That is, until he opened the box
"It was an old PlayStation 2 with the Wii U stickers and an empty Amazon Kindle Fire box,” Cassandra Burditt, Daevon's mom said.
Daevon didn't know what to think.
"He started crying is what happened,” Burditt said. “He was devastated. He was like ‘what is this? Where's the Wii? Is this a joke?’"
It wasn't a joke and things got even more serious when Burditt tried to bring the Wii U box back to Walmart. The assistant manager refused to correct the mistake.
"Because it came from the secure box, and the department manager is the one who sold it to me, there was nothing they could do and I needed to call the manufacturer,” Burditt said.
The manufacturer told Burditt Walmart was the one to blame.
"I started to cry and stuff, I was done,” Burditt said.
On her third trip back Walmart, managers finally gave her the Wii U she paid for.
"They fixed it, but it's not right,” Burditt said. “Someone needs to be held responsible."
WAFF 48 reached out to corporate Walmart and got back the following statement:
"Taking care of our customers is a top priority. In this particular situation there was a misunderstanding by one of our associates regarding our return policy. Store management has taken care of the customer.”
Daevon now has his Wii U and Burditt said she'll make sure this never happens again.
"Before you buy any kind of electronics from anywhere check the box before you walk out and pay for that,” Burditt said.
