I just keep my PS3 + Vita additionally to my PS4 and can play almost every PlayStation game:

  • PS1 games on Vita and PS3 (I prefer them on a handheld)
  • PS2 games on PS3
  • PSP games on Vita
  • PS3 games on PS3
  • PSVita games on Vita
  • PS4 games on PS4
  • PS4 games via remote play on Vita
  • Vita as additional controller for PS4

It's not necessary for PS1/2/P/V. But for the PS3 to work, you'd need to mirror the exact hardware quirks of the console itself, i.e. your attachment would be a PS3, defeating the purpose. In consumers' eyes, I doubt backwards compatibility is worth even 10$/€ for a sizeable portion of the market (>1m users).

Honestly we can look at the complete non-impact of late 360 compatibility of the XB1.
