It's not necessary for PS1/2/P/V. But for the PS3 to work, you'd need to mirror the exact hardware quirks of the console itself, i.e. your attachment would be a PS3, defeating the purpose. In consumers' eyes, I doubt backwards compatibility is worth even 10$/€ for a sizeable portion of the market (>1m users).
