Wii sold nearly 900 million units of software, that's certainly not "awful". And it was never meant to last as long as the PS3 and 360; Nintendo shot for a 5-6 year lifespan like they always do with home consoles, while Sony and Microsoft needed to drag out the PS3/360 as long as possible to make up for the money they lost early in the generation.
It's not a loss any more than the PSP is a loss because of the Vita's failure, or the DS/PS2 are losses because their successors steeply declined. The Wii didn't kill the Wii U. Wii U managed that all by itself.
