Forums - Gaming - Could be cool if Sony buys Crystal Dynamics or Tomb Raider

Buying CD means buying square enix. They sold most of their stock with SE already. Not a chance.

Besides, enough with TR. I want CD to make a new Legacy of Kain.

After the debacle that was the current exclusivity deal, I think it needs to come back to Sony

So let it be a frozen IP in that case. There doesn't have to be a Tomb Raider game every other year.
Also I don't think it needs to be restored to its "former glory". From what I hear it's a good game. It was just the marketing deal that gave it a poor perception and sales.

It's not about exclusivity, though. It's just fixing brand perception. If Square sells Tomb Raider or Crystal to Sony since they get to do with games up their alleys.

Teaming up with Sony, while it would do better than with Xbox, would still not be a good thing. Especially after all the flack SE got for teaming up with MS. You don't want to touch that right now. Sony already have their own Uncharted, that doesn't need to compete with another similar game. I'd rather them invest in something totally different in that case. Kojima, for example, was a great move, and it made sense because he needs funds to start up his first project on an AAA scale. They got Street Fighter, and they seem to have some sort of time exclusive deal with FF7 Remake. Keep going with the diversity.
And acquiring Tomb Raider is a gamble right now before we know how the game will perform on Steam and PS3/PS4.

No one really cared for the xbox version because it wasn't where the fanbase was.

According to vgc data, 40% of Tomb Raider 2013's sales were on Xbox consoles according to vgc data.

Why should it be bad? Tomb Raider is originally a Playstation game. People have connections with it. And ND seems to have the magic touch anyway and the acclaim. They can't seem to make a mistake. Plus a Nate/Lara crossover is more likely if Sony buys Tomb Raider at discount price thanks to its flopping and a higher chance of becoming a dead IP.

Well, because the fanbase for Tomb Raider 2013 was split the way it was. 40% is less than what Sony had, but it's a significant chunk.
Franchises can start off on different consoles, and do better on others decades later. Street Fighter started on Nintendo, but have done better on Playstation since. Tomb Raider is still popular on Playstation, but it also has a large following on Xbox. Or it had. We'll see how it goes with Rising when all is said and done.

As for ND, I'd imagine they would be quite busy with The Last of Us 2, because the first one was such a big success that they'd want to focus a lot on the sequel, rather than spend valuable resources on Tomb Raider.
Nathan and Lara appearing in the same game would be cool, but there are simpler ways to do that. (Akuma in Tekken 7, Cloud and Ryu in Smash, anything in Kingdom Hearts, etc.)

Kojima imo is the bigger gamble considering he has no IP's attached to him. Plus we don't even know how long it will take him to finish the game thanks to his smaller team.

Kojima is responsible for creating or producing several widely praised new I.P.'s. It's not just Metal Gear he has to his name. Snatcher and Policenauts are two of his creations that were highly praised. Reception for Policenauts:

GameFan 's three reviewers scored it 100, 94 and 92 out of 100. One of the reviewers said "that Policenauts has one of the best game storylines ever." Another reviewer said that he "truly thought adventure gaming could get no better than Snatcher" but Konami "has outdone themselves in everything from the beyond-beautiful music to the professional quality cinemas."[7]

RPGFan rated it 97% for story, 95% for sound/music, 94% for graphics, 80% for gameplay, and 80% for control, with an overall score of 98%. They called it "a masterpiece" and concluded that, from "the incredible graphics and soundtrack, to the compelling story, Policenauts is a true classic."

He was also producer for Zone of the Enders, and director for P.T. which was just a demo, but many people clearly wanted the full game. The fact that it would be called Silent Hills was not reflected in the demo that people got excited about.

So basically, he's created a lot of good things from scratch, and he has yet to disappoint in that regard, similar to how you described Naughty Dog. Sony are also apparently interested in new I.P's as of late, with games like Bloodborne, The Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, Detroit, Until Dawn, No Man's Sky, etc being backed in recent times, so a new I.P. from Kojima will be highly anticipated. They've probably agreed on a timeframe for his next game in the contract. It's not like Sony are in a rush to get the game out though, as they have games coming out the floodgates next year and beyond from tons of third party developers.

According to vgchartz with an asterisk.*

Don't think most people cared about reception. Just look at ROTR.

Those are not as big as Metal Gear. So my opinion that Kojima is a bigger risk than Crystal Dynamics doing Uncharted or ND doing TR still stands. They don't even own the IP of Kojima's new game.

Ummm no. I want an Uncharted beyond ND. Just because Sony has a lot of IPs doesn't mean they have to sacrificed one of their biggest IPs. One that was their banner IP during their worst gen. Just no.It was the one of the games that differentiated PS3 when they lost a lot of exclusives last gen.

No.Sony already has uncharted as its action adventure feanchise, it would be better to pick other genre that they dont have in their catalog nowadays as a exclusive. And Tomb Raider should remain multiplatform, as it is a better situation for us gamers

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

& then we won't see Legacy of Kain and Gex anymore, right?

Why should it be a better situation if tomb raider becomes a frozen IP?

Whats the point CD is a one trick pony and TR is basically irrelevant when compared to the giants Sony has like Uncharted or The Last of Us.

What would garantee that it would sell well just being a sony exclusive?Because sony fanboys would buy it because is exclusive? Not all games Sony touches goes gold.See the order as a clear example.People mistake Sony success with the PS4 as a hardware, and already assume that all of its exclusives will fibd massive success just being exclusive. If bloodborne were multiplat, it would likely sell much more than it did now.But I digress.

What i mean is that when Rise comes next year, most of the people that were going to buy the game at launch, will buy the game regardless of the mess that Square did with this deal.Being multiplat will maximize its sales, wether you like it or not

I just think Square Enix isn't a good Publisher for Crystal Dynamics. what with there crazy ass sales expectations and foolish handling of ROTR.

Let a responsible publisher have them. That being said which responsible 3rd party publishers are left?
