Forums - Gaming - What effect will the Tomb Raider Timed exclusive deal have on the series in the long run

Even with a PS4 release, it'll struggle to do even 3 million lifetime, which will be a disaster, as TR's 8 million was said to be "disappointing". It was a big mistake for getting an exclusive deal with Microsoft. Tomb Raider should've remained multiplatform.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

Its hard to prove without the counterfactual one way or the other.

Crystal Dynamics and Phil were clear that Microsoft helped significantly with development, resulting in the game being excellent. After costs got so out of hand on the first game, its likely that that assistance was integral to the game being so good.

Given the game would have been of poorer quality without the exclusivity deal, I think its clear that in the long run, the deal was healthy for the franchise - at least for those who are interested in it.

From a purely sales perspective, its even harder to speculate. Had the game come out and got a Metacritic of say, 75, due to it being poorer for the lack of investment from Microsoft, this iteration would have suffered heavily. That, in turn, would have effected perceptions (and investment) for the third game.

I remember all the times TR sold like crap with it's former titles and spinoffs and then I realized the franchise is still around.

I feel people are making this out to be the absolute objective death knell due to it being MS and being very easy to attach a stigma towards, of course nothing ill would be said if Sony did the same, likely for anything at all.

I can't wait to see it still live on though because it lived on through a lot more crap and while it does continue to live I'll be sure to document the stigmas for future reference (the kind of crow that does need to be served cold).

Says who?

If a franchise that it is mostly related to the Xbox platform is money hatted by Sony, and then the game flops so hard that dont even chart, i would be the first one to complain.

This practice has to end. Keep the Multi Platform games, well...Multi Platform.

P.D. Unless the game wouldnt have come out if it wasnt for the support of Sony/Micrososft/Nintendo (Bayonetta 2, Street Fighter V, etc).

Says me because I've been around the net enough to know that hardly anyone speaks ill of Sony deals, this gen especially, you don't have to take my pov but I've seen enough to know that this gen and the last, whatever Xbox had done/does in terms of any sort of deal is mostly frowned upon a lot of the time, even when Nintendo did the Bayo 2 deal the amount of scorn they got for such a deal and yet next to no scorn for the SFV deal regardless of differences, it just speaks voulumes that whatever deal Sony makes is somehow objective and subjetively good.

"If a franchise that it is mostly related to the Xbox platform is money hatted by Sony, and then the game flops so hard that dont even chart, i would be the first one to complain."

That's a very ultra specific goal to meet by the sounds of it, how likely is Sony to do this?.

I agree though, multiplat games should continue to stay as such but be on more than just two platforms.

what exclusive deals? most Street Fighter Fans are on PS4 now anyways. Thats why it hasnt bothered anyone.

And most of these so called Sony deals are decisions by the publishers to avoid the Xbox Ones devolopement cost for a port, why should Square Enix for example port over Star Ocean 5 or Nier Automata when FF0 and Tombraider sales are poor as it is now. Even MGS5 sold 5 times less on X1 over the PS4 and thats why you wont see Kojimas next game for XOne.

If S-E were disappointed with the rather good sales numbers of TR2013, they'll be downright devastated with the low sales of rise.

I know I'll get it for ps4 this year though. Just hope square doesn't plan on charging full price.

There will probably not be another TR due to its horrible sales and Square Enix will cut ties with Crystal Dynamics. So CD will almost certainly go out of business or at the very least severely downsize its workforce.

I don't think it will have that big of an effect on the franchise.

Honestly, I think numbers will be decent once on PS4 and PC.

I am hopeful that the timed exclusive thing really doesn't matter in the long run.

This is possible if they release it at a good time. If they just try to throw it in with other big holiday games it's just going to get ignored again.

You honestly believe that? It was coming to the ps4 at the same time until late in it's development, lets so it wasn't and Microsoft invested alot into the game why would they allow it on the ps4 at all? It be a SF5 situation but it isn't, so I highly doubt it was significant

As long as it does well enough on PC and PS4 I think the series will be fine.
