So how many people know the name of the first game Mario was in? He also wasn't called Mario. Alright I'll tell you. It was Donkey Kong and his name was Jumpman. Now Donkey Kong has trouble making cameos in Mario games. What's up with that?

I would define a Mario games as where you can play as Mario. So Brawl, yea, it's a Mario game.

Nah, Mario games are games with Mario in the title, Smash is definitely another franchise.
With 1M from Mario Kart Wii this week, plus the normal ridiculous numbers from M&S, NSMB, SMG and MKDS, current gen Mario sales should hit 60M this week.

Mario sales this generation has outsold the 4th best selling gaming franchise through all time (Final Fantasy) and is only 3 million behind Grand Theft Auto. (Although 105million behind Pokemon which is at second)

Square have reported FF shipments of 80M, and Rockstar have reported GTA shipments of 70M. Wikipedia has links to financial reports.
And Sims, counting SimCity, the Sims and other odd games I believe is well above 100M.
But still... Mario is above the likes of GT, DK and maybe Zelda from current gen sales alone.

The mario games are basicly cash cows for nintendo with out them (or with out Mr Miyamoto) nintendo be nothing.
