Forums - Nintendo - 'Third-party releases for WiiU must use the gamepad or not release at all'

I can only understand that mentality if you're getting a lesser game than the other consoles. A game that is on par should not receive serious complaints, especially when it's for a console that is well behind the leader in sales. No one is entitled to third-parties using each console's respective gimmick.

I especially hate the ignorant "lazy devs" rationalization. If programmers aren't working on one thing is almost certainly because management wants them to work on something they deem more important.

Nobody complains about non-use of gamepad.

... are you kidding?  Because otherwise it would be very awkward, considering several people are doing just that in this thread alone.

Wii U is getting Minecraft a couple years late and at a $10.00 premium versus the other platforms. The developers should have at least offered Wii U owners some compelling reason to buy the Wii U version of the game. Gamepad integration for the menus would have been a huge selling point for a game like Minecraft on the Wii U.

Third parties release inferior versions of games on Wii U months or years after they were released elsewhere and then use it's poor sales to justify abandoning the Wii U (think Watchdogs and UbiSoft). Well, this is a self-fulfilling prophecy... If you make a crappy game then it is not going to sell regardless of the platform. ZombiU is a million-selling game on the Wii U because Ubisoft took the time and effort to make a decent game for the Wii U and I guarantee that it has made that company a profit in return. The same could be the case with Minecraft... the Wii U has a young audience that would eat this game up... I could easily have seen it selling > 2 million if it was released on Wii U a couple years earlier and properly utilized the system that it was released on.

As much as I agree with a lot of that rethoric, ZombiU hasn't sold a million, and Ubi didn't profit from it.

I'm not disputing what you're saying and thank you for the article.

That said, VGChartz has ZombU pinned at 0.93 million right now and I do believe that it will cross 1 million before the Wii U's life is over.  The fact that ZombiU can't be profitable with those sorts of sales blows my mind.   I started out as an N64 gamer and back then a million-selling game got recognition and a big price cut for those kinds of sales.  I honestly don't know about the gaming industry anymore...

Big games today need at least 5 million, or even 10 million, to be profitable. However ZombiU didn't seem to be a particularly high budget game.

I understand if Minecraft on the Wii U didn't use the gamepad if it was released years ago, but when it's so late, you better put some effort.

Yea, well unfortunately the gaming industry doesn't work like that anymore. 1 million doesn't guarantee profit anymore. The Tomb Raider reboot sold 3.4 million in its first month, and that was considered underperformed. An extreme example perhaps, but still. The AA industry is a hell of a lot weaker nowadays. Most notable releases nowadays are either indie or AAA.

I fail to see the relevance of this topic TBH.

This isn't really an issue, I don't see for every game Nintendo gamers saying they want gamepad features lol.

For games like Minecraft where you have to build shit, it makes logical sense for people to question why they didn't do it.

This is like the Wii all over again. People were upset with Capcom for doing onrail shooters because they saw how awesome RE4 was. They wanted RE5 and RE6 because of the controls. They didn't give a shit about gfx.

and it was explained over and over again why those games never went to Wii.

keep in mind the game had some hype, was bundled in Europe, and also how much of those sales were at even close to full price? Looking at Ubi's history they expected it to sell much better.

Most games don't need it. But Minecraft is the game that should have it. Because that's a no brainer. Any building game, or RTS game should always use it. If Fallout 4 was on Wii U. I would totally expect the building mode & Pip Boy. to fully use the Gamepad's screen. Another no brainer.

I never really had any complaints about her lack of gamepad features from 3rd parties, what I do have a problem with, is charging more for a wiiu version of old games. There have been a few, mine craft being the latest example. If they had added gamepad features for the wiiu version, an argument could be made to justify the inflated price, but, as it stands now, it's just a port of the 360 version at 50% more in price.

Third Party Games shouldn't release on PS4 if they don't use the Touchpad and the lightbar, either.

Well at least for me, I'm fine with them not using the gamepad for additional features, but it would be nice if they could incorporate, say, a inventory and crafting feature on the gamepad.

Again, this is not necessary, but it would be nice to have..
