Forums - Movies & TV - !! SPOILERS !! Star Wars 7 - Just a Remake?

Yeah, sometimes it felt like a remake... but I can understand it. If they came up with original crazy stuff fans (biggest whiners) would complain A LOT. I bet they played safe to don't disappoint all the whiners that complain about everything about the prequels... basically to restore the "balance" of the franchise, if you know what I mean. :P I also believe since now the road is paved, episode VIII and IX will be much more creative/original.

yeah i though the same.

Basically. The movie was only created to cash in as I expected and Disney got us all. Movie is forgettable.

I saw it today and came out with the same feeling, made worse as I was never as massive fan of the originals.

yeah, thats how i felt too. didn't really like the movie because of that too. but rae and fin were very likable at least.

I never understood really the big appeal in seeing something *completely* different in a sequel. If you want to see a new movie, then *gasp* maybe go see a different movie?

TFA and Jurassic World are shattering box office records because they are loving call backs to the original movies of those franchises which people really loved. They give you the same feeling.

I don't want to see a Rocky movie where he becomes a .... gymnast. I don't want to see a Star Wars film where the characters are bland/boring and have no banter/sizzle in their relationships like the prequels or overdone CGI characters that aren't funny.

Now let's go to the real point, is Kylo strong or not? I got confused, he seemed very talented with the force, then goes to have trouble in a saber duel with 2 untrained users.

Points to him being strong:
- He can stop a blaster rifle in midair, and hold it there for a good 5 minutes while walking around and talking to the stormtroopers. That would probably take a massive amount of physical energy to stop a laser with so much energy and a massive amount of mental energy to be able to hold it there while carrying on with business as usual. We have also never (to my knowledge) seen a previous Jedi/Sith do this.
-
He reads Rey's mind. And Poe's mind. While this has been seen in previous movies, he clearly has great skill when it comes to mind reading. We have also never seen someone so directly reading someone else's mind.
-
He pulls the general all the way across the room and holds him in the air in a rage of fit when he learns of Finn and Rey escaping.
-
He is related to Anakin, and trained by Luke. While that doesn't automatically make someone talented with the force, it means he must be very genetically predisposed to the force, and he was trained by one of the best.

Points to him being a weakling
- He is unable to withstand Rey reading his mind. Although I suppose you could chalk this up to Rey being very talented with the force, rather then Ren being bad at it.
- He loses in a light-saber battle with Rey, who has no force training whatsoever. Though you could also say this is because of Rey's talent, he also just barely managed to beat Finn just minutes earlier. This shouldn't have even been a contest, as Finn has no force sensitivities, and most likely very little training in melee-combat.
- He is hit with Chewie's bowcaster on the bridge scene. No Sith Lord in any of the previous movies would be hit by a blaster rifle, because they could so easily deflect it with their light-saber. That said, Chewie is most likely very skilled by now, being such a veteran since the Clone Wars.

It is very similar to a new hop but it was the most reasonable way to go. If they had done a 180 to try and be more unique. all the fans would cry foul for deviating from the original trilogy formula.

This movie gets a pass since it is starting a new trilogy after the less-than-stellar prequels. Episode VIII and IX will definitely need to be more inventive and go in very different directions if it wants to stand on it's own. I'm very much looking forward it, SW:TFA is my favorite SW so far, too bad Abrams is leaving apparently.

He's not fully trained, it's even mentioned int the movie by you-know-who at the end.

It kinda makes sense too, look at what happened to the Emperor for giving Vader too long of a leash. He ended up dead. Snoke just needs Ren, but likely hasn't completed his training.

Also in terms of lightsaber combat ... who does he have to practice against? All the Jedi are apparently gone, Luke is gone, so he fighting Rey might just be one of his first real lightsaber fights and she has incredible natural power with the Force. And again if you're Snoke there's no real point to training him too hard in this area.

If I was Snoke and I was looking for LUKE FREAKING SKYWALKER, I'd probably make sure my guy who was probably going to have to fight him was trained. But hey, I'm not Snoke.

On that note, if I was Luke and one of my students killed all of my other students, I wouldn't have turned tail and run. I'd kick his ass... but if I did run and hide, I wouldn't leave a map to my hiding place!
