Forums - Sony - PS4 Masterrace? PlayStation VR requires some extra hardware; a processing box

I don't want to see a half-assed cheap VR machine either, but this thing looks like it will price a lot of people out. How many people will buy PlayStationVR when a PS4 itself is the same price or cheaper? Not many. They should probably wait until they can hit a mass-market price point to launch this.

Shovelware. Another Sony failed product. No wonder the company is dying. Tsk~

This has been known for ages

Secret sauce confirmed!

this box will only handle outputting the TV image (split up and de-warp it for 2D plane) aswell as processing the 3D binaural audio

it won't provide any additional gpu power and it's only connected via HDMI and USB(power), so the data transfer would be waaay to slow to add to graphics processing anyway

Not so sure about that. If that was true, the box would barely need to be bigger than an USB stick. Yet it looks like it's size is roughly similar to a Wii (non- U)

PlayStationVR will come with an extra processing box, it has the same size like a wii or wii u

Intrresting, i think its a good decision by Sony to use extra hardware, VR takes a lot of power and will be expensive anyways. I hope this means uncharted 4 like games will be possible without segnificant downgrades in VR too.

What the heck ? Is that a PlayBox One ? LEL!

considering the size, I'd say a Wiistation. Or an OUYE for the design.

Isn't it used to double the frame rate? I thought it was supposed to up the fps to 120, probably by techniques used in tv's nowadays.
Hopefully the specialized box will keep the display lag as low as possible and add final headtracking corrections to the image, so turning your head will have the lowest lag possibe.

no, the PS4 handles the reprojection, from what I read it's a very fast GPGPU task that uses minimal processing time right before the frame is output

and it's very different to how a TV adds in-between frames - a TV takes 2 frames and generates an image based on the differences (it's output before the 2nd of the 2 frames, but obviously has to wait for that 2nd frame to be received and for processing for the generated one to be done -> added lag), reprojection uses the last complete frame and adjusts it based on the latest tracking sensor data

Ah that was old news. (The FRC unit effectively doubles the frame rate).
From the slides in this Neogaf thread it looks like it's indeed moved to the gpu.

He only briefly mentions the psvr unit at 14:30. It's powerful, does a lot of heavy lifting, improving as we go. No info what it actually does. A true black box so far. But yeah 3D audio and extracting a tv screen image makes sense.

It sounds like reprojection is only moving the frame based on the latest head movement data after the frame is rendered. So the unit can still handle that and the optics distortion. Anyway it seems like they don't exactly know yet what it will do.

You forgot RIGS, Summer Lesson, DOA Xtreme 3, DREAM and No Man's Sky.
I'm pretty sure the last 2 games i mentioned will has VR supported. Infact, any First Person games could do. So don't be so surprised when the next Call of Duty or Battlefield will be compatible with Oculus Rift and PlayStation. VR

hm.. I wouldn't really expect first person shooters on VR yet.. people feel really weird when they move the character with a joypad especially in high paced gameplay - while RIGS is conceptually similar it's putting you in a cockpit, which funnily enough seems to trick the brain into being fine with controller based movement

Well, we will see :). I mean if games like RIGS can be VR-ed, I'm sure the developers will eventually find a way for high-paced games like COD/BF. And not just FPS. Like i said, any kind of First Person games would do, like Slient Hill P.T, Far Cry Primal, Fire Watch, etc.

My money right now is on No Man's Sky and DREAM! Oh and Summer Lesson too, lel.

Another game would probably get VR supported is "Detroid" (i know it's called Detroit: Become Human, but the name is just so weird so i make my own)

Not to mention of rumored exclusives like the next Sony Bend's Game or the God of War 4 will have VR supported as well. So yeah, in term of video games for the system, it already covered. What's more important is the price, if they priced correctly like the PS4 or just like the competitor Oculus Rift. Then it would easily be a hit.

there was a detailed briefing about what the break out box does in one of the numerous VR-themed talks for devs, the slides were publically available, but I can't really find the thread this info was posted in, it was months ago

it guess it needs to be bigger than a stick because it has quite a few connectors and I think the HDMI chip they use in there might be quite special aswell, as it's able to handle 1080p/120 and an additional 1080/60 throughput (for example for asymmetric multiplayer they showed in Playroom VR)

MMs "dreams" was already announced to support VR, which I'm super happy about - that means there will be a pretty much endless amount of VR content for the price of a single game

And I'd really like to see VR in Firewatch and NMS aswell, although these have on-foot exploration which seems to create problems for many people.

I doubt a bit that the AAA games you mentioned follow suit, as those need to push the boundaries graphically.. well, I think heavily story driven games like Detroit:BH could profit a lot from VR though

As for price, I think it will be at most be $/€400 and hopefully a bit cheaper than that.
