Forums - Nintendo - XCX Director: 'I don't like current Japanese videogames, I prefer Western videogames'

If he prefers western type games so much, then he should make a western type game if he think they are better. Because XCX is very much a JRPG.

What is a JRPG? Explain how XCX is very much like it, and how it could be made not to be like it.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I love it how Xenoblade mixes japanese and western elements to make an overall greatly rewarding experience.

Interesting. I would be curious to see how it would turn out if they tried to make a Western RPG.

It's odd that he says he doesn't pay attention to anime these days, considering Xenogears was more or less a direct copy of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Not saying what he says isn't true, but it is certainly a striking change.

DId you play Xenogears or watched Neon Genesis Evangelion at all?

Because other than both having mechs, they are nothing alike.

Their plots are quite, quite different. I mean, I can see somebody argue that they share similar themes, but the actual plots aren't the same.

There are obvious references to each other. SEELE and the Gazel Ministry, for starters?Seriously, look up connections between NGE and Xenogears. There are tons of references.

I have played Xenogears four times and watched NGE twice. Perhaps direct copy was an overstatement on my part, but the concept of making a mecha with clear and prominent references to Jung, Freud, and the Old Testament is borderline plagiarism. I say this as someone who is a hardcore fan of Xenogears.

While it remains culturally Japanese, XCX does have a lot of noticeable Western influence; it's open, non-linear structure is more remiscent of a WRPG than a JRPG, and its aesthetics include a lot of clear nods to the likes of Mass Effect and Halo.

No, that EAD has the talent to make games like Monolith and they don't do.

I'm not so sure.  They are absurdly talented in their areas but EAD isn't exactly loaded with RPG experienced devs.  Maybe it would be interesting to have them team up with another studio who does to combine their skill set, like Atlus or Mistwalker.

I would crawl through broken glass for The Last Story 2 co-developed by Mistwalker and Nintendo EAD.
