Forums - Sony - Sony: 'Our 2015 first party lineup was not as strong as we would have liked'

First party was ok this year.
Wish we got more games in 2015, but the games we got were very good (Bloodborne, Until Dawn...).
Can't wait for 2016!!!

Seems he was a tad confused about SFV and No Man's Sky, as those are 3rd party through-and-through. Nevertheless, while this year wasn't "trash", I always pegged 2016 as the "it" year for PS4. From the very first day, in fact! PlayStation's first two years, historically, are a little thin (although the PS2 had some big titles release in 2001). The PS1 and PS3 were in a similar situation to the current PlayStation, but this year wasn't too bad. Frankly, I was expecting the "greatest line-up in our history" from a competing brand and didn't get that, so I can't fault Sony when I wasn't even promised it in 2015.

I'll say this, though, the gen has been a slow burner for me. Even on PC, things just feel a little....empty. 2016 is the true turnaround with some of my favorite IPs making a return, like:

Mirror's Edge
Uncharted
Ratchet & Clank
Gears of War
The Walking Dead
Final Fantasy

Then there's the new IPs:

Horizon: Zero Dawn
Quantum Break
ReCore

Should make for an interesting year!

And don't forget that mid year Shu was already saying their first party for this year was a little too thin.

Good thing I use a console for at least five years.

Nothing substantial.. But you listed X1 games that aren't substantial. You keep having this very strange criteria (goal posts?) For comparisons that always wants to remove as many PS games as possible and include as many Xbox games as possible. That is some funny gymnastics.

What is strange about listing AAA titles? I dont get your logic.

Last Guardian a new franchise? And Street Fighter as a first party?

Last Guardian never came out... technically it's still new.

Technically - yes. And they helping making SF5, yes. BUT all this small things just add up into some stupid pr shit.

Yes, referring to SFV as first party is inaccurate but the guy just admitted that their 1st party holiday lineup turned out worse than they had hoped.

That's actually a moment of honest admittance and all you have to say is "stupid pr shit". Sigh.

Besides, the term "1st party" gets thrown around a lot these days. Often in the wrong context. Look no further than Microsoft's latest NPD PR:

"The most critically-acclaimed holiday lineup of exclusives in Xbox history helped drive 44 percent growth in Xbox Live hours over last November, and 72 percent growth in U.S. first-party retail game sales [this includes Rise of the Tomb Raider] comparing sales from August through November in 2015 to the same period last year."

"Yet again", even though they've never said it once and did not say it in this instance either.

Don't see how MS did " very well". All Sony needs to do next year to match this Xbox year is release U4 and GT; that's it. And a 2016 with no exclusives other than SF5 (the "equivalent" of Rottr), U4 and GT would indeed be a "trash year", take from that what you will.

Sony and Microsoft with both have great years, next year. It will be more competitive in terms of exclusives. Sony didnt really need exclusives to beat Microsoft and their bundles during the holiday proved that.

Quantum Break, Scalebound, Gears of War 4, Killer Instinct: Season 3 & Forza Horizon and more will be dropping for Microsoft next year. Sony has Street Fighter 5, Uncharted, Horizon and a couple of other games but nothing substantial. Sony will dominate Microsoft in JRPG's though and the multiplats will be great on both platforms to boot. Its why I own both consoles. I get everything and cant get screwed by timed exclusivity.

Dude. You had a (good) point about Microsoft having more blockbusters in 2015 but now you're completely contradicting yourself by highlighting both unproved (Quantum Break and Scalebound) and historically low selling games (Killer Instinct and Forza Horizon) as reasons why Microsoft has a strong 2016 lineup.

Earlier you argued that PS4's 2015 lineup of exclusives (Bloodborne, Until Dawn, The Order: 1886, MLB 15: The Show, God of War 3 Remastered, Tearaway Unfolded and Nathan Drake Collection) objectively was inferior to XB1's (Halo 5: Guardians, Forza Motorsport 6, Gears of War Remastered, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Rare Replay) for the sole reason that XB1 had the biggest selling blockbusters and in some ways I agreed with you (though they all ended up underperforming in sales).

So why aren't big blockbuster exclusives important in 2016 when PS4 clearly has the upper hand?

Objectively speaking 3 of the biggest PS exclusive IP are getting a new release in 2016.

1. Uncharted
2. The Last of Us
3. Gran Turismo
4. God of War
5. Ratchet & Clank

I said that in terms of AAA's Sony and Microsoft should be fairly close, but if you want JRPG's Sony has  Microsoft beat there. Microsoft has no chance in hell of getting a fair shake in Japan.

Damn, this Manage Director doesnt even know his own company, lol. Street Fighters Isnt even a 1st party, and so is No Man's Sky. He shoulda mention REAL Exclusives like DREAM, Gravity Rush 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn.
Especially Horizon Zero Dawn, it's arguably one of the most anticipated Exclusive of next year along with Uncharted 4 and Zelda 2016.

RATCHET AND CLANK!

I think you completely misunderstood his point. It's not about the type of games you listed. And, (just a little pet-peeve of mine, nothing personal), if he's speaking "logic", then it makes sense and is valid. ;)

Sony wins the list was regardless of AAA's though. By that measure they've won every year, but the bar is still AAA's. Sony is known for being the key deverloper of AAA's of the big three. Every gen we get new IP's out of them. Who is it hurting to compare them and hold them up to that standard?

I think the issue is you calling "certain" PS4 games "unsubstantial", while listing other games as "substantial" (by your own metric).

No. When I say unsubstantial I am not discrediting them in general, but only in the AAA list. When we make lists on VG Chartz the criteria of a strong lineup is usually headlined by AAA IP's. It's been that way since I joined in 2008.

That's not the criteria you were using, as you had KI S3 (what?) there and were missing many PS4 AAAs. It's your "logic" that one can't "get" because this is what you did:

"Here, let me present X1 AAAs: proceeds to list a few and pads it with one irrelevant DLC update. Now here, let me present PS4 AAAs: proceeds to miss more than half of them."

No problem Sony, ps4 will still sell. I think they don't even need to release any exclusive anymore and would still win this gen easily.

well 1080p and japanese games would be still exclsuive to PlayStation, i wouldnt blame them

Sony can admit it now I wonder if the fanboys can?
