Forums - Gaming - Steam's "New" Big Picture Mode Is now my fav "Console" UI

What was your favourite console/gaming UI before this? You mentioned owning PS4 but not if you thought its UI was enjoyable before moving onto the Steam UI.

Just want to know what you are comparing it to, my favourite UI is still probably the Gamecubes one for the simplicity and serene BGM.

I have to check it out. A couple of years ago, I had my PC boot straight into big picture mode and I could just turn it on and work it like a console. Needed a mouse for certain things but it was still a cool experiment.

tried the big picture thing before, the old one. And watched the vid of the new one. I'm all for jumping onto something cause it looks new and fresh (probably why I spend my time playing with skins within my kodi app than actually watching stuff) but I disagree that this UI or any currently available this gen is better than the PS4s UI.

I know about tastes and all, and opinions and stuff but to me, the PS4 UI is the most functional no frills console UI out there. I could go into why I think so but not really in a mood to type too much.

Havent really used Big Picture one other than that one time when it first came out to see how it is.

My gaming desktop is in my first room while my HDTV is in my second room.

When I buy/build my new home in the future I'll more than likely use it. For now I use the Steam In Home Streaming service which is awesome!

Btw my favorite UI is the XMB from the PS3/PSP. Followed by the PS4's UI which is really good too.

Cant stand the Vita's UI from when I tried out the demos - not sure if they improved - as for the Wii/WiiU/3DS got nothing good nor bad to say about it - its just there and does the job that it is intended to do I guess.

The GCN UI was pretty cool but thats mainly cause of the music ;p. PS2 UI is okay too imo.

Sorry couldn't find a better vid than this one, but cool little easter Egg about said haunting BGM if you didn't know where it came from.

I honestly don't like it. There are a few aspects that remind me of the second Xbox 360 UI update and Windows Media Center. For me, the PS4 UI has the perfect mix of functionality and looks.

I didn't care much for Steam's previous UI. Looked fine.

Now...eh. It looks amazing, but I don't think it will affect me much personally.

To be honest i was never really found of PS3/PS4 UI but i liked the X1 UI and lastgen the X360 had my fav UI.

I am curious to know. If you could point something out, whst would  you say you don't like about the PS4 UI? The PS3 UI was great, but I could understand why people wouldn't like it. It was slow. But the PS4? I don't get it. Even MS revised their XB1 UI to be more like the PS4, albeit vertically instead of horizontally.

For me, this is what a UI is; pleasing to the eye, easy to make out and navigate and idiot proof. So basically it comes on, and you don't need to be lectured on how to get it to do whst you want it to. With the Ps4, you put on your console, and the first thing u see is your recents  list of apps. with the most recently used app(game) at the front of the list. I can't imagine faulting that system. Anything else that requires less immedicacy, like looking for a game or checking stuff out on the store... more "deliberate" actions lie deeper into the UI. Which with the ps4 usually means scrolling further left or roght or hitting up.

Oh, and let's not forget them dynamic themes. Meaning you can find something you like or that appeals to you. (truant pixel anyone). Like this is the theme I'm rocking right now. Does any other console or PC UI out there allow stuff like this?

heh, Which 360 UI tho? they were pretty damn different throughout the generation.

Blades

Twist UI (Zune/media Center)

Metro (Win 8)

Don't think I know of another system which changed so much during it's generation, maybe we'll see something like this over the 8th gen again but it was strange that you can find 3 (or did I miss one) completely different looking Operating systems with X360s

That was grand... as long as you didn't need to use the bathroom while picking a game, that sound of the water eb and flow was rather harsh on a full gamers bladder.

You know about the start up Easter egg of the PS2 UI? The Towers being related to how many files and hours spent on them on the memory card inserted.

Sorry if the audio of this video link is awful, I don't have my speakers set up so just seen that it displays what I mean, sorry if it's a squeaky kid doing the V/O for it or screaming in shock since it is on youtube.
