Given the price of the hardware they are fairly powerful. Especially if you bought a console this holiday for $300 with games.

That's why in the thread title I said "technically", as in "we're technically seeing 960x540".

That would make sense actually; Digital Foundry didn't specify, but presumably if the same process is used, Xbox One would be rendered at 800x450. Yikes... |
You say "yikes" but the end result from temporal filtering is a game with sharp visuals and 60 fps.
Frankly, I'm fine with this technique if its going to help push graphics and performance.

Their technically seeing a 1080p framebuffer reconstructed from a 540p image with 2x MSAA (I have no idea if their also doing 2x the shading rate either.)
Still misleading title IMO ...
So basically the machine is making a picture with half the image blank and an elf with crayons is colouring in the rest? Is that what I'm reading, in essence?
I quite like the idea of having an elf in my console, though I do worry that it might not be getting paid or enough to eat. Where do I insert the sandwiches and are elfs vegetarian? They certainly look like they should be vegetarian. Damn I shouldn;t have thrown out the instruction manual. What if the elf is gluten free? If I feed it a sandwich then it might die and then my PS4 will stop working.
Or is the PS4 actually a PS2 with a PS4 emulator?

Same here, temporal reconstruction is really going to be a god send when it comes to increasing performance and graphical quality ...
Temporally filtering shadow maps is a perfect candidate to reduce shadow aliasing ...

I've deleted the "yikes", it was unnecessary.
Honestly, having not seen the end result for myself, I cannot say whether it works or not. Perhaps it does. I will say, I am generally a fan of when devs make the necessary tradeoffs to achieve 60fps.
So it looks a bit soft, nothing wrong with that. The game is 60fps on consoles and that's all that matters.

Of course the elf is gluten-free, it's a component, not bread.
And you really mean to say you don't feed your elf??? The poor thing must be starving. Now, you see those ports on the side...
