Forums - Gaming - What's with the hate for turn based RPGs?

Simply put, turn-based RPGs and action-based RPGs are two distinct genres. Some people don't want to think what their character does, but just play. Others like the idea of thinking about their options and choose wisely. For both genres are good and bad examples.

I personally like turn-based more, although I still like some action-based games like Xenoblade. But I also like board-games.

I think turn-based puts the focus away from quick reactions to more deep systems of fighting. And this offfers some truly different styles. Look how differently turn-based RPGs can be solved by the examples of Child of Light, Bravely Default, SMT IV, Pokemon or Fire Emblem. This diversity is also very cool.

^ this. Deeper combat system, and more strategy... instead of just fast reaction speed and button mashing combos.

I think people that love strategy games, will prefer turn based rpgs.

And people that love fighting games (like streetfighter) will love action rpgs.

Its just 2 differnt genres. It doesnt mean turn based rpgs are bad.

Really, how so?

If you want to talk about the coating, then yeah, it gets a little embarassing compared to FF X.  But my guess is that you didn't separate "best battle system" with "best characters", "best look", "most compelling story" or some other superficiality like that. The mechanics and pace of FF X-2's battle system are excellent, especially compared to FF X. It simply has one of the best implementation of the job system in any of the series entries.

I agree with you, ignore the j-pop cheese fest it is, FFX-2 has one of the better battle systems in FF games. It's free moving and quick with loads of customisation.

Because nobody plays Pokemon for the story. That's not the case of Final Fantasy. Guess what happens when how the game plays isn't the #1 reason to like it for a decently sized group of fans.

They don't buy it? Yet you've said they do. What do these fans care about how the game plays if they are already buying it regardless. I can understand why they want it changed but they are already buying it and putting up with the gameplay. Why should the entire FF series change to meet their needs?

Because changing what they like less into something else would be an improvement for them.

Why should it change? That's what I want to ask to Nomura&Co.

The only game I tolerate with a turn based system is pokemon and even with that game I need to play it in a computer with the speed at 500%.

I'm just not patient enough and I actually feel like I have way less control and options.

Turn based RPG's are pretty much my favorite type of game. I wish there was more support for them nowadays. It's really sad because most RPG's are going for action nowadays.

It's my favorite combat system, and the main reason why I mainly play on handhelds now. For some reason the idea that the west wants more action and less strategizing was put in japanese developer's heads, hence the sudden surge of action JRPGs for home consoles to appeal to western gamers.

Handhelds are dying in the west but loved in Japan = Most JRPGs there are turn based
Home consoles are dying in Japan but loved in the west = For a JRPG to sell it needs to be an Action JRPG.

When referring to handheld games, I never heard a developer mentioning that they decided to change the combat system for an action based one because that's the trend now and what the players want, but that is constantly mentioned when talking about JRPGs for home consoles (Valkyria: Azure Revolution, Final Fantasy VII being the most recent examples of that)

Can't say I'm really fond of the system, I prefer real time combat for most of my games due to my like of the constant pace, having to think on the move a lot and react to whatever comes my way. When it comes to RTS games I prefer my combat all in real time with no turn based combat of any sort because that's the style I prefer and find the most exhilarating. There are only a few RPG's that I don't mind TBC and that's Disgaea, the older FF titles, Star Ocean, Fire Emblem, Pokemon and XCOM, anything else beyond that I'm not really interested in.

This is probably why I prefer more Western titles these days than Japanese since most Japanese RPG's go with TBC and since that isn't really my jam I avoid them and support the action based ones instead, it's just my preference, I don't see why we have to start insulting others that prefer real time based combat and pitting the two against one another in trying to claim one is objectively better over the other (because I;m starting to see a pattern already).

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Attention span and thinking is my guess. If someone is stuck in one area for a long time, you get pissed and want to move on. I wonder if the same people, who complain about turn base. Would be perfectly fine. If the battle can be fast forward like Braverly Default.

Because the game is being altered to fit someone elses taste. It's the same idea, if it was flipped. Would you like it, if you loved GOW and it went turn based. Because there was more people liking that genre, no. Insulting people is stupid, yes. But it's more of the fact companies are screwing with games, just for the sake of more money. People get mad. Welcome to Capcom's shoes.

People ridicule turn based RPGs because they generally aren't very popular anymore. A lot of people also don't realize that turn based RPGs are a product of the technical limitations of platforms rather than genuine design decisions.

The thing is theres plenty of people that prefer that "game design" wether game devs came by it freely or forced upon them.

** And this is one of those things that gets spammed alot

(people dont realise my arse, how many times have I seen this line resently?).

"turn based isnt liked by anyone, its old and a by producted of times where they where forced due to technical limitations bla bla bla".

Haters gonna hate :p

That's perfectly fine if you prefer that. Many of my all time favorite games are turn based, but I can still realize:

1. It's not popular.

2. These creators want to do something new rather than retread.

Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,

I think it just depends on who you talk to..

A lot of people I know enjoy turn based RPGs, myself included, and I don't see that much hate for it :/

Ironic. Since FF7 is a RETREAD, to being with.
