Forums - Sony - FF7 is turn-based, but without pauses in the action.

Let's just wait for someone on YouTube to break the trailer to pieces and/or Nomura comes out with more info, until then, we really don't know much about it

There was an interview after the keynote where they said it would beva mix of both real time and the classic system. I don't think they will go more precise than that out of fear of angering each faction. But atm what i see they showed is an evolved ATB system that makes turn-based something you hardly notice. I guess its a bit like Xenoblade.

I dont see how somethign can be turn based and not have stop in the action at the same time, arent those 2 things mutualy exclusive ? Anyway I tought it looked great, the voice acting was kinda meh tough.

The limit system seems to work opposite from the original. You deal damage to increase the bar as opposed to taking damage.

Mostly just Wedge.  Cloud sounds like that before they reach Tifa's bar and then he changes little by little.  Barret actually sounds much better than I thought he was going to be.

I still don't like it. It kinda makes it cheesy to be in a battle that you seem to have total control over. I agree, we should wait for more info. I don't see a ATB Gauge or anything but there's a menu that resembles that of Kingdom Hearts. I'm still getting it though. The music sounded awesome! At this point i'm just ranting.

Theres alot of disinformation going around from misinterpretation of the footage from the trailer.

The game isnt an action game. It is clear there is an ATB bar under the character names, but characters continue auto-attacking when it isnt their turn.

The attack comand is a strong attack. The auto-attacks are weak attacks.

The defend command beeing an option sugests you dont have a real time control of your character actions.

Its an evolution of the ATB system doing away with the nosense, but its not removing it and making it an ARPG like FFXV.

There was alot of disinformation going around, so i thought this thread was necessary.

It's not an ATB gauge (under the character's name).

The bar depletes and fills up as you attack. Watch carefully around the 1:25 mark:

An ATB bar fills up over time and when it's full, it's that character's turn. This is not the case here.

It is very difficult to see if it fills up by itself aswell, but it does look like attacking fills it up faster. Even if it isnt an ATB bar the principle is the same. Though it leaves me wondering what it means from a party perspective.

It was said in the interview that it wouldnt be just an ARPG, so i keep wondering how much control we actually have.

Calling it a mix doesn't really tell us much either, aside from it not being completely new or old, they could mean lot's of different things by callig it a mix. Personally, I doubt an auto-attack function would ever be present in a Nomura game, the man loves the concept of having full control over your character, even if it's just one, and the bits of combat we've seen just look too fast for it to be mainly turn-based, and the game obviously allows movement during battle, since one of Cloud's attacks sends him flying across the battlefield and the enemies seem to be moving and attacking at very random moments.

I'm now filled with determination.

Eh, I'll just wait until SE confirms one or the other. I'm fine with both so at the end of the day it won't matter which it is to me.

So it's a bit like a Xenoblade/Dragon Age just with a character switch.

I think the battle system will end up closer to FF12 and KH mixed together. It will NOT be like FFXV where specific moves are assigned to specific buttons. Assigning moves to the battle menu will limit the amount you can do in the battlefield . Having a combo does not mean it's automatically going to be like a hack-and-slash game. It's not really uncommon for a game to feature a system wherein you can input certain attacks together and have them be performed on your turn. Even games with the ATB system feature combo attacks.
