“NX [the codename for Nintendo’s next game system] is in development. (It is) a next step in our dedicated device strategy, the core and primary focus of our business.”
“As far as NX goes, I’ve said it’s different and obviously a new experience. If you look back to the beginning of our conversation today, we talked about the transition from Wii hardware to the Wii U hardware and how difficult it is to explain to the consumer base what is different and new about the new hardware. It’s difficult to convince them to switch from their current platform to the next platform. That being said, I can assure you we’re not building the next version of Wii or Wii U. It’s something unique and different. It’s something where we have to move away from those platforms in order to make it something that will appeal to our consumer base.”
“As for the codename NX, I don’t believe that there’s any real meaning behind it, and to be perfectly honest, I don’t know where it came from. Or perhaps Mr. Iwata had meant to tell me and then never got the chance.”
That last bit is sad...
Either way, NX is still succeeding at being an interesting point of discussion.

Holy shit that is so lame! I tell you what would have made it a helluva lot easier to explain the move from Wii to Wii U: if you hadn;' been cute by putting a U there and just called it Wii 2!!! Everyone understands numbers and they know that [insert name] 2 is an entirely new and improved product to [insert name] original.
Also, what are they defining as their consumer base? Arguably Wii U is only appealing to their consumer base, so what they need to do is put something out there that appeals well beyond their consumer base. Are they taking aim again at the people who aren't really gamers but who got swept up in the Wii craze? Is that really fertile ground again? I suppose it could be with the right product and the right marketing. At least this time around those people are somewhat more primed and well disposed to buying a video game product, and maybe after a several years break they have an itch they want to scratch again. Or are they going to try to go for the PS/Xb/PC gamer and try to convince them that Nintendo is the place to be? I'm not sure which is the harder sell actually. But I do think if Nintendo can get the major 3rd party franchises onboard, and the product can deliver a better experience for those 3rd party franchises, then it can possibly eat into that market.
