The "adding architecture" is a misundertood quote. What Iwata wanted to say it's that they are not going to throw away all the work done on the Wii U, and will absorb in a possible way. In other words, the knowledge and maybe some assets done in this gen will be useful in the next one and they won't need to start from zero once again.

Also, it was intended, not for sure. If they go a for a new, easier architecture, for sure they will forget about the one on the Wii U.
