Well PS4 has modifications to bypass GPU cache and pass CPU commands direcly through the additonal bus, for any GPU Compute, which AMD added to the system's SOC. The amount of Cache in the GPU is allocated correctly based on AMD's design and I'm sure they added what is needed to make the most of the GPU in cache dependant portions of a workload.

How much of a system's performance is used depends entirely on optimization of your code design and that's something that only comes through iteration of it.

The CPU always had the same amount of Cache, unified for all 8 Cores, whether it's used for gaming or OS is immaterial, it's constant regardless of the job type.

In CPU dependent workloads it means that developers have an extra core, so they're less bottlenecked on those tasks, it's about 16.6% more performance in that area, the amount of cache available doesn't change just because this extra core has been made available to games.

Is your pic of the SSM game that we lost?

Great rundown of what it means when they say "Unlocked a core", you seem fairly familiar with VLSI...

My Avatar is from the leaked concept art Guerrilla Games did for Horizon Zero Dawn, my Sig is from Media Molecule's new game Dreams.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4j8Wp-sx5K0 Check out their creation at around 1:06 here (MM's E3 2015 trailer).

From what I've been able to see through searching Sony Santa Monica's game there doesn't seem to have been anything leaked as far as concept art, the only glimpse of anything was a teaser they put into God of War Ascension.

As for the PS4 tech stuff, I've just researched stuff, read Mark Cerny's interview with Gamasutra among other stuff, it's a bit of a hobby, I'm not a programmer or anything, though I wouldn't mind having a stab at game design in the not too distant future.

Here's the Cerny interview: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/191007/inside_the_playstation_4_with_mark_.php?print=1

Thank you, I'll have a look and get back to you! :)

Logically thinking Sony enables 7th core to support the VR games. I think the timing is also right, since they would want to have the support in place somewhat before the VR is on the market.

"In that, with this new core available for development it means that on paper the PS4 is again more powerful than the Xbox One."

I laughed at this sentence

Yeah - when i read that earlier today i laughed too. The PS4 has always been more powerful than the XB1. The only thing the xb1 has over the ps4 is an ~ 8-10% higher clock speed on the CPU. Even then, clock speeds do not necessarily equate to 100% to power.

Not according to Forbes
http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2015/01/04/microsoft-opens-up-more-cpu-power-on-xbox-one/

This isn’t going to be some magic bullet for the Xbox One where suddenly they’ll come out with an ad campaign extolling their system as “more powerful than the PS4,” but if they can continue in the Unity tradition of running smoother than their competition, that’s certainly going to be a point in their favor.

Didn't you know XBox One games have been running smoother since end 2014!

Oh my... this can't be real. Is this like some sort of reverse troll article or something.

Forbes.. Every time I see an article is coming from Forbes I refuse to open the link. I've got enough of their bollocks. They are not even biased, they are total crap.

Yeah, if I had your self-control......

I simply can't resist to see what nonsense they are gonna peddle next. Human nature.

Indeed... everyone stops to look at a train wreck and Forbes just keeps it coming.

On paper it will be aprox 17% more power, but how much of that you can translate to real performance benefit is hard to tell. It all depends how fast the system can feed the CPU,and whether it will be at the expense of the GPU. That depends how fast the cache memory can operate to feed them both. It will no doubt be an improvement, but not 17%.

Well, if that is the case why not some GDDR5 on the side? Would be great for those open worlds...

I have some inclination that it is for VR though.

Yes,of course GDDR5 will help greatly. I actually think it will benefit PS4 slightly more to open uo the 7th core, than it helped Xbox One.

Getting sick and tired of the useless comparisons to PS2 when it comes to hardware. The PS2 didn't demolish everyone despite being weak, it won because it was the only viable option for gamers at that point. Coming from the back of the PS1 juggernaught probably also had something to do with its success.

Nowadays we have so many entertainment options that it's simply not enough to deliver a certain amount of content. It's about leading in pretty much all fields to be the most viable option. If the PS4 had a bad interface, only a few apps, no bluray and weaker hardware than X1 it wouldn't matter if it had 10 times as many great games because it would've died at launch.

PS2 can power a nuclear missle guidance system I'm pretty sure it was a god dammed supercomputer

Since when did Forbes become hardware experts? They need to stick to covering billionaires. lol

When did Forbes say anything relevant to gaming ever?
