I don't know why people are blaming the gamepad. It sure costed about $100 when the Wii U launched. However it should be cheaper to produce now. Nintendo could drop the Wii U price, if they wanted.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo is actually paying more to get a screen that low quality/crap ... lol. No one else is ordering anything like that.
If I'm the vendor giving Nintendo these screens and they're asking me to take a lower margin on them ... I'm saying nope especially at the low sales volume Nintendo is selling at.
It's just overpriced. The 3DS is also more expensive than the Vita around here.

I also wonder if resistive touchscreens are still mass produced for other devices than 3DS + WiiU.

I actually think abit if it is just greed.
Nintendo are chargeing almost more than is good for them (milking consumers as much as they can possibly get away with).
There is no reason why a 3DS should cost more than a Vita, if you look whats inside the two systems.
If you don't think selling a Wii U at $249 with Smash Bros & Splatoon bundled in is a price drop you are crazy.
OP: Nintendo chose a poor strategy with their hardware, opting for obsolete custom die and parts that make their hardware cost deflation really slow compared to Sony and MS' setup's.
Basically; Nintendo have had little leverage with pricing since they've run the risk of losing money since launch if they slice the price by any significant amount.
What they got for their money will, in hindsight, be considered ridiculous, all things considered.
I said it from the beginning and I still hold to it to this day; the Gamepad was a huge mistake and by far the Wii U's main problem, both in cost, appeal and utilization.
A Wii-U price cut is overdue, the Wii-U #1 rank at target.com black Friday sales proves that. Nintendo could easily double weekly sales and still be profitable.

Vita? The handheld Sony ditched two years ago. The device that seems cheap unless you discover that you need very overpriced memory cards for it?
On the other side a handheld with glasses free 3D that uses normal SD cards with no hidden costs.
Regarding WiiU: There are WiiU bundles with games out there that are much cheaper than PS4/XOne if you look for them. And after buying there are no hidden costs, whereas you need to buy online for PS4/One.
Well, if you look at the bundle they have, Splatoon/Smash Bros, those 2 games cost about 50 USDs each, so if you look at the Wii U alone, that is already 100 dollars off. So it's already at a much better price than looking at everything together. So it is technically a pretty good price.
