I think the buyout was simply to keep this off of PS4 while Halo 5 released. The "Greatest lineup in Xbox history" is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard. It killed the sales of many games (Halo 5, Fallout 4, ROTR). Why release so many AAA titles in suck rapid succession? It did absolutely NOTHING for Xbox One.

You clearly have no clue! Don't let Sony amazing success cloud your view on what the competition has been able to achieve. While the Xbox One hasn't reach the same success has Sony's PS4... they have still manage to deliver on the company fastest selling, most profitable console in Xbox history and you can't denied how great their game lineup has been.
Seem like every one on this thread forgot about Uncharted 4 and Sony failure to deliver on their promise. The reason Rise of Tomb Raider is time exclusive to Xbox one was because Uncharted 4 supposed release in Holiday 2015.

So you're telling me a great game like ROTR having paltry sales has nothing to do with it being released the same time as Fallout 4? Just answer that simple question. And where in my OP did I even mention Sony? You quickly bounced to MS defense mode as if I bashed the decision by praising Sony.
If Sony were to ever release Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, and ROTR at the same time they'd all hurt each other's sales. Thus this would be a bad decision all the way around. Don't get so angry and defensive over things you have no control over. Sheesh!
Finally, don't act as if ROTR were selling gangbusters Xbox fans wouldn't be in threads talking about how amazing the game is and how Sony fans have to wait another year to play it. They were all doing that prior to its release. Fanboyism works both ways. Sometimes you're the victor... Sometimes you're the victim. Feel free to categorize yourself in this one.

Edit: I'm blown away how well Fallout 4 is selling I expected big just not that big... Fallout 4 is great for Xbox one too since the Fallout 4 bundle is very popular.
Well if Rise of the Tomb Raider was going up against Uncharted 4 has a timed exclusive it would of done much better then what it did now going up with Fallout 4. But this release date and timeline was set long before the annoucement of Fallout 4. Microsoft doesn't care if most gamers pick up Fallout 4 over Rise of the Tomb raider as long has they can get people to buy their consoles. You are bashing the Microsoft promo "Greatest lineup in Xbox History", but microsoft goal is to sell consoles not really to sell gang buster Rise of the Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider franchise has limited appeal, they only sold less then 4 million in first year when the combine PS3 and Xbox 360 hardware was over 150 million.
Microsoft paying for this deal is to diversify their lineup and Rise of the Tomb Raider is great addition to that lineup. Sure today, when all of the game have just release the market is over saturated with great AAA games but come December and January. Rise of the Tomb raider should do very good numbers and there no other AAA in the action-adventure quite like Rise of the Tomb Raider this holiday season.
ROTR is selling just is on par to every other exclusive from Xbox one that's not Halo or Titan Fall. Beside, while many sell were lost to Fallout 4, this game should still have long reach in this Holiday season and will do much better then if it was delayed to February or March 2016.
Selling 230K in first week released on the same day has Fallout 4 is very good numbers and we still don't know digital numbers. SAve to assume that this game sold more then 250k in the first week.
