Forums - Sales - PS4 & XB1 install base hit 500k in China

If ps4 ever gets down to 199$ it should do well in China. It will have a lot more support by then both local and worldwide.

ZhugeEX can Sony or Microsoft develop their ps4's for China in China? Because if they did wouldn't that bring the price of it way down to a level the mass could buy into?

I can see Sony supporting China as much as possible going forward because in 5 years when the PS5 launches the market could be big.

They already build the consoles in China. It's more to do with the tax + extra costs they need to pay first that increases the RRP. Although PS4 recently had a price cut (along with Japan and Asia) which I've heard boosted sales a bit.

Oh btw, Sony said they are comitted to launching PS VR in China as well, same time as RotW.

What do you think the split is, ZhugeEX?

Also, why didn't Sony and MS launch the PS3 and 360 over there? Sounds like a missed opportunity to get consumers on their ecosystem with a cheaper console.

Thanks for the info.  Sony are smart.  They know China has a rapidly growing upper and middle class.  This market will continually grow. The question is how fast.

They probably see this as a future investment.  Invest now and reap the rewards later.  Ps VR could do well if it's allowed launch with all the western developed games.

Yea, but the games tho...

Being as though Sony passed Microsoft in China in only one month, I think its far to assume that the vast majority of those consoles are PS4s.

Not sure on the split. The PS4 accounts for the majority though.

So consoles were banned for the past 14 years so PS3 and 360 never officially launched there. That being said there was a niche number of gamers who imported consoles and in fact the PS3/360/Wii were accounting for between 1-2m sales per year in China from 2006-2011 ish. So there is already a large number of people who own these consoles and piracy is a huge reason why people imported 360/PS2 in China. So it would make no sense for Sony/MS to release them officially here in 2015 when anyone who wants one will have one.

With PS4 and XB1 they launched just after the Western launch + have full Chinese support etc... For example there are some games on PS4/XB1 in China that are not released in any other region. So this time there is a good reason to buy the official version console over an import. And so far 500k have been purchased.

Yup, It will grow but I don't think it'll be fast.

Also there is upcoming competition from FUZE, Tencent and others who plan to launch their own consoles/gaming related products. Not to mention that majority gaming is done on PC/Mobile and that won't change. Only a small number of people will actually have interest in buying these consoles.

Giving this a little bump.

Hi buddy, apologies for not getting back to you sooner. Hope you had a good Christmas?

As it's the end of the year I have a bit more information I can post in this thread regarding the console market in China. Excluding revenue generated by hardware sales, software sales generated a total of $21.6m in China, this is up 140% year on year thanks to the launch of PS4 but as a whole it's quite a low number. For example, Mobile Games generated $7.94 billion, yes that is billion for mobile versus million for console. So you can see how small the console market is for software in China. That being said, this number does not account for grey market imports from Asia/Japan/West, but it won't make a huge difference in the contrast between mobile and console.

Here is the list of games approved for sale on console in 2015-
