Damn they should easily hit 40 million by March.

Sold through? Doubt it. Shipped? Possibly. Sony is expecting to have shipped 39.8million PS4s by March 31st and that's after they already upped their forecast twice. First they expected 38.3million by March 31st, that was upped to 38.8million and then that was upped to 39.8million.

Shipped. Not sold sold through. 10 million in less than 5 months would be crazy lol.

For all that PS4 is doing very well, these sales are not getting anywhere close to making up for the massive die off in Nintendo and Xbox sales. There's a very good chance this generation will be 50% of last generation, especially if MS sees the writing on the walll and hits reset early (2017 is my guess). Dying might be overstating it, but console gaming has definitely passed its peak in its current form. The 7th gen is the peak generation for total console sales and we will never see its like again, IMO.

Basically, no it's not dying. However, console gaming  is slowly decling.  Right?

Transforming, IMO. Gaming in front of the TV will always be with us, and I think it will still always be a popular way to game. But the way the games will be delivered to us is going to fundamentally change over the next 10 years or so. Digital sales of full games is increasing, but I think digital sales of full games will kinda be like the Blu-ray situation. It will be rapidly overtaken by streaming. There is a big problem with having upgrade cycles for dedicated gaming machines, not least the issue of backwards compatibility. Game streaming pretty much eliminates that fixed hardware upgrade cycle. On the one hand you will have new hardware coming out all the time, on the other hand you will have people able to stream the latest games on 10-year old hardware, albeit possibly at lower resolution / fps. If PSNow manages to survive and be a streaming service with decent content, pricing and longevity PS4 is could be the last traditional console I own. Better still, of course, will be a unit that can stream games from multiple game streaming services so you are not tied down to one streaming ecosystem.

Digital sales still only make up a fraction of physical sales though.

A pretty large fraction though. And of course there are a large number of albeit smaller scale games that are only available digitally.

You could argue that last gen total console sales were unique due to the Wii bringing in a totally different audience. Like pretty much all the women in my family and friends circle who bought the Wii for Wii Fit and then left it to gather dust.

Comparing this gen to last gen would be pointless as that audience no longer exists and the WiiU sales reflect this.

I think it's pretty certain the PS4 will be the number 2 selling console of all time behind the PS2. The question is if it can pass the GB/GBC numbers @ ~120mil. I think it can.

SuperData puts digital sales for GTAV to be 7% for consoles and 14% for Destiny.

It will be an interesting next couple of years. I think the PS4 is going to blow past PS2 with ease. With things like PlayStation Vue bringing Live TV to the casual market, PlayStation VR ushering in the next era of digital interaction, and Dreams bringing game development to consoles, PS4 is expanding well beyond what any console has offered before, opening it up to a much broader market.

And they said console gaming was dying...

Now they just say it's front loaded. oh and my favourite. that this will be the last console generation.

The best is this will be back to Ps2 length generations and the PS5 will be out in 2018

Sure. But I also think Nintendo was hoping to make a helluva lot more of those people into longterm gamers. But even if we look at the 6th gen we're looking at the 8th gen coming in below that. And when you look at the PS360 aggregate that comes in under the PS2/Xbog aggregate. And the combined time on the market for PS360 is more than the combined time on market for PS2/Xbog. So arguably in terms of core console gamers one might conclude that the 6th gen was actually the peak generation and that the 7th gen was a decrease that was masked by the massive influx and subsequent outflow of motion control casuals.

If Chinese people can be convinced to switch from PC gaming to console in large numbers things might change. But if we are going to largely rely on traditional markets for console sales long term we are in for a decline.
