For all that PS4 is doing very well, these sales are not getting anywhere close to making up for the massive die off in Nintendo and Xbox sales. You could argue that last gen total console sales were unique due to the Wii bringing in a totally different audience. Like pretty much all the women in my family and friends circle who bought the Wii for Wii Fit and then left it to gather dust. 

 

Comparing this gen to last gen would be pointless as that audience no longer exists and the WiiU sales reflect this. 

Sure. But I also think Nintendo was hoping to make a helluva lot more of those people into longterm gamers. But even if we look at the 6th gen we're looking at the 8th gen coming in below that. And when you look at the PS360 aggregate that comes in under the PS2/Xbog aggregate. And the combined time on the market for PS360 is more than the combined time on market for PS2/Xbog. So arguably in terms of core console gamers one might conclude that the 6th gen was actually the peak generation and that the 7th gen was a decrease that was masked by the massive influx and subsequent outflow of motion control casuals.

If Chinese people can be convinced to switch from PC gaming to console in large numbers things might change. But if we are going to largely rely on traditional markets for console sales long term we are in for a decline.
