Instead of re-reviewing games sites like IGN should simply WAIT until the full content is released so that they can give a rating on the FULL experience since nowdays almost no game gets released with all the content avaiable...
Still the 8.6 is kinda deserved imho, the 7.9 really looked like a continuing of the 7.8 Meme with Ink instead of whater...

Well, reviewers still need to inform day 1 buyers.  So this is probably the best option, informing early buyers and then updating the review after the bulk of free content is available to inform future buyers more accurately.

so wouldn't it be better for Reviewers to ask for a special version of the game with ALL the planned Free content that has to come to the game ? if a Developer can't give them that then shame on them, their game deserves a lower score :v

I feel the problem is not re-reviewing it's the score system, if sites just employed a system of Good/Average/Bad as a verdict it wouldn't be much of an issue as the verdict would still say whether the game is good or not but the numbered system is so flawed because each outlet scales it differently.

Next time I have an exam, I want to re-do it 3 month later to have a better score;)
Splatoon deserved a re-review, it's a better game by now. My favourite game magazine M! Games did the same

I have a feeling that this won't be the last time we hear of a re-review.
Since we live in a day and age where games get continuously added content and support throughout the generation via DLC and updates, modern day 8th gen games, between release and 2 years after release could have content that doubles, perhaps even triples what it had at launch, and depending on its value and timing, can hurt or help the game in the long run tremendously.

Nice to see it get a higher score, but I don't really think this is necessary.. :/

Was just chatting about this with some folks on AIM. While I get why IGN decided to do this, I think it sets a bad example.

Games SHOULD be judged on their day-one build. If publishers or developers want a positive score, then they should be trained to release a full, working game at launch. And publications and consumers should be trained to expect a full, working game at launch. If a publisher decides to hold back content (to be released later for free or behind a paywall) or decides to release a buggy, poorly-optimized product, then it should be held accountable. The score should suffer as a result. And the publisher and/or developer shouldn't expect a second review once the content that could have, should have been available on day one is finally released days, weeks, or months down the line.

I completely agree. While i can understand the arguments in favor of re-reviews, i don't personally think we should be holding developers and publishers less accountable to the state their games release in. We already see quite a few games release either incomplete or in a sub-standard technical state, and that's with them being held permanently accountable to the game's day 1 state. Giving them more leeway isn't going to help at all.

Hey I might be getting it soon from a friend since he's selling his wii u, since we will both be noobs we should play together sometime.

Cool, will do!

I have heard nothing but good things about splatoon and I am sure it deserves at least 86. On the other side of this as many of you have mentioned there have been some games with rocky starts that got serious and consistent updates such as Drive Club and Killer Instinct, that should be re-reviewed to be consistent across the board.

On another level I find it quite hypocritical for people in the press to criticise preorder culture and day one dlc etc if they will only do launch reviews. It has all contributed to the perception that sales after the first few days don't matter. It also makes games feel rather like disposable pleasures when in reality we might hold on to a game for years.

Saving face. This probably means they'll nominate it for GOTY.

Well done, the first review was pathetic, they didn´t even counted ranked battles (that was unlocked for critics) just because it wasn't avalible day 1... but day 3 lol

The diference with other games that people is already bringing on, is that Splatoon was not broken, everything worked perfectly since day 1, and the game was not rushed, most of the content avalible now was already on disc, Nintendo just delivered on a different way because they though it was the best way to do it, and it worked pretty well, yet it was punished for that by some media, like ign. Now however, the score makes more sense.
