Forums - Gaming - (This is interesting) DF: Faster hard drives boost Xbox One Fallout 4 performance

Very, very interesting to see that the problem is related to storage and not to other things people usually associate with performance. I can't imagine how game would perform if Sony and MS had not went the route to copy every game to disk first.

If the game is optimized to stream from both blu-ray and hdd, then it would actually perform better. This gen's consoles have a faster blu-ray drive with lower seek times (cav instead of clv), yet it gets ignored as an extra source for grabbing data. You can pull all the small random access items from the hdd install while simultaeneously reading the larger map data chunks from blu-ray.

Of course since we're talking Bethesda, it would probably be worse :)

Maybe next gen consoles will have multiple drives as a standard so software can read from different sources at once, then everything doesn't have to go through the same bottleneck. A seperate SSD + HDD combo would be best. I imagine background downloads will screw with game performance too atm, it has to save to hdd some time.

Because only in Fallout 4 there are extreme loading issues?

There's plenty of other games that have lengthy load times that could benefit from using an ssd. A better selling pitch would be that all games benefit from using it instead of a regular hdd but in the same sense, an SSD will not fix a broken game.

We are not talking about load times as in what we know in general but something that has been done for ages: streaming data while playing so you don't see the data loading, making it seemless.

A good gaming PC generally cost more than $350. Also, some PC ports are pretty much broken early on. Batman is still broken.

Sure but you don't have to pay for online so you can cut the cost over five years and use that for the PC.  All the software is cheaper as well so you will save money that way as well. Sure some PC ports are broken but so are some console ports. I've owned a PS4 and X1 before so I know some games were broken early on. BF4 was unplayable when it was released. Halo MCC? Yea we all know the mess that was. There was massive issues with almost all Bethesada games on the PS3. People who use consoles like to pretend there games are never broken but it's just not true and it's a silly argument. I've owned all the consoles and just recently went back to PC gaming after being gone for like 10 years. I've experienced the ups and down from all three they all have their pros and cons. At the end of the day though I'm a graphics whore and when I saw my friend run Dying light and Dragon Age Inquistion maxed at 1440p I was amazed and instantly sold everything to build a gaming PC.

I could argue every point. But I'd rather just point out 8th gen consoles have games I want to play that won't be coming to the PC anytime soon if ever. And I really enjoy or look forward to those games.

With that said, I see more value in owning both a PS4 and X1 then a gaming PC. The games I want on PC generally come to those consoles and play fine.

But hey, this is a matter of personal taste. Graphics are secondary to the games I actually want to play.

I can understand that. In my case there is nothing on consoles that was so important that I wanted to keep mine. Everyting I want is multiplat so I don't care about the rest. I will admit that I'll miss The Last of Us 2 but I heard they were thinking of starting a new story and not Joels so if they do that I'll lose interest. I think the highlight of going back to PC gaming for me has been how amazing last gen games look now. I played through the whole ME series again maxing out everything and throwing the resolution up to like 3200X2600 something crazy like that and it just looked amazing I was shocked. Either way to each his own I understand the love for consoles I've own both the X1 and PS4 before as well. PC's have just come a long way since I used to be a PC gamer 10 years ago and I had to go back.

Is the default harddrive inside the Xbox One just insanely slow or something?

Not likely. This is a problem unique to Fallout 4. We don't see this issue in other open world games.

However, a lot of games do benefit in load times from an external HDD. I'm sure PS4 would as well if it supported external HDDs.

It supports internal HDDs/SSDs though and it's very easy to change.

Im aware and it would be nice if X1 did the same.

However, connecting an external drive is even easier way to get more storage. Also, two drives versus one appears to help with bottleneck.
