Good reasoning OP. But I don't know, if it sold so much, why wouldn't MS brag more about it? Or even release some concrete numbers? I believe Halo 5 FW will be more like 2m than 4m.

From what I've seen, they didn't brag about 3, Reach or 4's numbers either when they launched.

May be plausible, but I guess NPD should tell us quite a bit.

They sure as hell bragged about halo 3, it was the biggest game launch in history.

'' Microsoft Corp.'s alien-killer gaming thrill, "Halo 3," has broken the U.S. sales record for a new video game by garnering an estimated US$170 million in its first 24-hours on sale, the company said late Wednesday.

The performance beat the previous record setter, predecessor Halo 2, which raked in $125 million within 24-hours after its launch.

That's not all. Halo 3 has beaten other records as well. More than 1.7 million copies of Halo 3 were pre-ordered in the U.S., making it the fastest pre-selling game in U.S. history, Microsoft said''

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

I'll hold my estimations for NPD and other official sources. If we're lucky, NPD should even give us the amount of Halo bundles that were sold, which should let us figure out a bit more using that revenue number of 400$ million.

Sounds reasonable to me, pretty much everyone who bought an XB1 is going to get Halo

This wasn't true before and is not now. How do you come to this conclusion at all?

"With the highest week one attach rate for a Microsoft first party title on Xbox One"

that statement basically tells us everything we need to know. According to vgchartz forza  5 launched with a 28.5% attach ratio. 28.5% of 14.5 million (would be at least a few 100k higher now, as the charts are old) is over 4.1 million. If we had new charts it would be closer to 4.5 million. So there u have it, according to Microsoft using this sites numbers guardians sold more than 4 million copies.

Forza 5 launched with 28.5% attach ratio, 28.5% of 14.5million... Xb1 didn't sell 14.5million consoles in 1 week & surely the attach ratio would of gone down not stayed the same or go up, definitely with games like Horizon 2, F6 + every other title... More like 28.5% of 1-2million at launch & the game has now gone on to sell over 2million units at least according to VGC.

Least Halo is a much bigger IP and will go on to sell millions more.

The problem is you cant trust pr words, who know how they calculated the attach rate for this one

We see how they severely spinned the software sales by talking about all the money from hardware sales

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

We dont need vgc for this one since at least 80% of the sales will be made in UK and NA, we already know the first ,we will know the other in few days, and there will be no way to spin réal npd sales this time with confusing pr

I think it sold around 3.8m.
~350m= 5.2m Halo 3 for just software.
~400m has some subtractions from hardware and microtransactions.

A year ago Halo sold 60m. The franchise got 5bn with Halo 5. Without Halo 5 it is 4.6bn.
Using proportions we get 5bn x 60m / 4.6bn = 65m
That suggests 5m but it is obviously less due to Halo sales within a year and the PR suggesting it is both hardware and software this time.

So my rough guess is 3.8m-4m

Yes. Halo 5 made less software revenue than Halo 3 or 4 (or else they wouldn't include hardware in the comparison). Halo 3 and 4 made ~300M FW on software. So Halo 5 made less than 300M in software alone.

Xbox 360 owners played Halo 3 for 40M hours FW, Xbox One owners played Halo 5 for 21M hours FW.

In UK, Halo 5 made 7.7M£ FW for software. Halo 3 made apparently more than 20M£ (from Neogaf).

So, we know AT LEAST than Halo 5 sold less than Halo 3 FW, and we should start with this maximum evaluation : any evaluation leading to Halo 5 being the best selling entry in the series is wrong.

And Halo 5 sold less than at least one third party game. Do we know what is the fastest selling game on Xbox One? Titanfall? Destiny? How much did it sell? It will give another maximum evaluation.

If we take the previous fastest selling One first party game sales, and the fastest selling 3rd game party sales, then we'll get two border stones. It will already be easier to discuss with that.

Ive been saying the fastest selling exclusive is titanfall with 900k fw.on a 3.1m installbase

Didn't see that, thanks!

So, 29% attach rate is surely the best one, and Halo 5 is below this 29% mark. Halo 5 < 5M confirmed, even if it's not a shocker, it's something ^^.

900k seems low though, another should have done better. Do you know what Destiny sold FW on Xbox? Or TKK? I know Destiny sold 150k FW in UK...  That's surely the fastest selling game for the console. Or another game like FIFA or CoD last year?
