Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Halo 5: Guardians sells more than $400 million (games and hardware)

Tagged games:

The game is unequivocally a sales success (congrats!), so as many others have already stated, its really unfortunate that the PR department tried to unnecessarily inflate that success further with PR gymnastics. Just let the game's success speak for itself, and it wont be met with such cynicism.

Also guys, lets ease off the off topic personal shots. It really isn't necessary at all. I've already made 3 moderations so far in this thread, I'd rather the thread not be a blood bath. Thanks.

Eh, we'll get numbers on NPD anyway. No one should expect Ms (or Sony, or Nintendo, or any other games company) to give sales figures right away. They might do it when they pass a milestone, but other than that, most video game companies don't give out precise sales information, and when they do, it's not often.

We know it sold about 200k first week in the UK (including digital), so we have some info to go off. NPD will provide us with a lot of what more we need to figure out approximate sales.

I thought the source said it was like 150k physical sales?

then people on neogaf point out evidence from past games of the same genre, that digital sales are like 10-15% of the physical sales.

Basically First week from UK is : 150k + whatever % you think digital sales account for.

Most people assume this around 10-20% or so (usually its on the lower end).

If we re generous and give it 20% sales as digital downloads, that means its sold :

150,000 physical and 30,000 digital sales = total of 180,000 (with digital)

People on neogaf brought up earlier FW sales of halo games in the past from the UK, and even includeing digital, sales where down from past titles.

What a surprise... Neogaf was wrong.

I love how they can say SO MANY things... but don't give us sale numbers.

Have they ever given launch week numbers for any Halo game? Just a question because I don't know.

great sales
but there's a caveat
adding hardware, that includes bundles and LE editions
so the theory of it being a signficantly lower selling halo title hasnt been disproven
NPD Coming soon so we will know the true week 1 sales in the us and uk

People still whining about no sales numbers from MS?? Do they not understand why MS stopped doing it or something? Competition's fans brag and hate and use these sales numbers online to bash the system. People on the fence see this and decide XBO is not the best choice if only x amount of people are playing it compared to y amount of people.
Literally the only reason and its a very good one. People love their console numbers for some reason.

Halo 3 hours and "number of players"
More than 2.7 million gamers have played “Halo 3” on Xbox LIVE in the first week, representing nearly one-third of the 7 million Xbox LIVE members worldwide. Within the first day of its launch, “Halo 3” players worldwide racked up more than 3.6 million hours of online gameplay, which increased more than elevenfold to 40 million hours by the end of the first week,

Halo 4 hours and "number of players"
Halo 4” also shattered the record for the largest number of players in the history of the “Halo” franchise, with over 4 million players in the first five days. Users spent a total of 31.4 million hours playing “Halo 4,”

Halo 5 hours and "number of players"
Fans have logged more than 21 million hours of total gameplay, including 12 million hours in campaign mode alone.
For Halo 5 we get the hours but no "number of players". And if we compare those hours...

I can play this game too. Halo 3 had 3.6 million hours spent online. Halo 5 had 9 million.

Lol, it seems like you got lost in MS spinning. The 3.6 million hours is only for the first day. For the week the total numbers for Halo 3 is 40 millions hours lol

People have no idea what it sold digitally. Ms said its the bestselling game week 1 for Xbox store ever. So assuming it's on the lower end of the 10-20% range(got pulled from nowhere by the way) is nonsensical. For all we know it could be at 40%. Need u be reminded that digital gains market share everyday.

Halo MCC will sell 5+ million copies(including digital)

halo 5 will sell 10 million copies(including digital)

x1 will pass ps4 in USA, and UK.

I don't think what you're pointing out is contenxtually relevant, though: ricesou took MS press release numbers that show hours dropping from 40 (online) to 31.4 (total?) to 21 (total). That means what the only conclusive data we have is that, from Halo 3 to Halo 5, online hours played dropped from 40 to 9 (21-12). That represents a 75-80% drop in online hours played, which I think is the point that ricesou was attempting to highlight.

Except that's comparing the first day of Halo 3 to the first week of Halo 5.... it's 40 million vs 9 million.
Actually they don't state the time span for Halo 5, but I doubt it wouldn't be up to date for the release of the statement.

I'm more interested in what the digital percentage of sales is for the fastest digital selling game. 20%, 30%, more?

That 10-20% is from industry reports, so what JRPG is saying is not baseless. As far as the "bestselling game week 1" quote that's only relative to other game week 1s for that store, a very limited sample size. Also, that could very well mean that it made the most revenue and didn't move the most copies. I think it's wisest to reference trends and not jump to any conclusions.
