Forums - Gaming - How has Gen 8 been for you so far?

It's been a while since I made a thread, but it's something I feel is a long time coming.

Besides the 3DS, nearly everything to me this gen has been either okay, or a disappointment (with some hidden gems). I'm liking some... some of the new IPs MS has invested in with Sunset, and Ori. I enjoyed Shadow of Mordor as well. The newer releases from this year, I've mostly skipped.

On PS4, Infamous was pretty fun, and Wii U's had its gems, but nothing on any of the three platforms have really come close to what i enjoyed last gen. Maybe I'm getting older, I don't know.

Some of the problems I've had with gen 8: DLC, delays, broken games, XXXGB patches (day one), lack of new gameplay experiences (vague I know).

Right now I think I might stop buying 8th gen games and replay 7th gen games. Anyone else have similar experiences? Anything totally different?
I'm glad PS4 is getting a ton of JRPG support by the end of this year and onto next year though, so I might wait until some of them release to get back into gen 8. Sorry this OP is all over the place, as well.

Hey, I'm enjoying the 8th gen quite fine, thanks for asking : )

I've been enjoying the games I got on the Wii U, like 3D World, Splatoon, Smash Bros, and Mario Kart to name a few.

3DS I've been enjoying a bunch load!!! x ) So far so good. Can't wait for more games, like FE x SMT, Zelda U, X, and Fates. x D

Also, still playing things from 7th gen, since I have a lot of catching up to do, and some of the old games are just so fun to boot up again! Been playing Super Nintendo and Super Famicom games also! x )

Gen VIII doesn't start until Game Freak says so, what are you on about?

Okay, seriously, I've had lots of fun on the 3DS. Most fun I've had on a gaming platform, apart from PC, ever. It's well worth the money to me.

Now, the Wii U is less so, and more of something I've started to use to play Wii games without needing a TV. I still play Wii U games, of course, but I really appreciate being able to drag it around the house - important if you have a really impressionable younger brother.

Utter disappointment for me.

I am supposed to be going for a Wii U, already have a 3DS with some physical and digital titles. the majority of my games are on PC and since 2013 none of the other two plats really gained me interest into grabbing any of them, Wii U has only managed that not too long ago.

I remember last gen I went with a PS3 early on, then that died a year and a half into the gen and I went with 360 from there on till 2012.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

This gen has been a delight so far - personally speaking. A bunch of multiplayer games usually keep me entertained while also I also get my fix of singleplayer experiences. Although I think my view may be a bit blurred as I often play on many systems from older generations... maybe that also plays into my general opinion on gaming

It's been fun, especially on the Nintendo side with games like Smash Bros, and Splatoon.

Looking forward to other titles, like XCX, The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and the upcoming Zelda game.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

3DS has been wonderful, Vita was a disaster, Wii U's been decent, and PS4, while lacking many exclusives that I want, has been fun mainly due to third party games.

I enjoyed last gen a lot more by this point.

As expected, I think that would be the best way to summarise it.

Nothing really amazed me in the first year although I was impressed with the visuals of inFamous: Second Son and Killzone ShadowFall was OK. Some of the games I played were fun or incredibly well put together, but nothing ground breaking. This is typical for the first year of a new console generation though as most devs are still transitioning and are still making cross-gen titles or remastering older games. Destiny and Watch Dogs had a lot of promise but essentially fell short of the marketing hype.

More recently, Metal Gear Solid V, Witcher 3, Bloodborne and Dragon Age Inquisition have been very impressive. We're starting to see what this gen is really about in these titles but there's still room for improvement. We also have an awesome looking Star Wars game, a new Halo and Fallout 4 still to come this year. Impressive stuff, but I expect to be impressed; devs making better use of the hardware and demonstrating a significant improvement over previous gen.

Next year is when we really see developers really start to stretch their skills to make use of the hardware on offer. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Uncharted 4, Final Fantasy XV (hopefully), No Man's Sky, Mirror's Edge and the start of console VR. All these should really show what this gen is about.

So, like a typical console gen.
