Forums - Sony - I watched my first Blu ray Movie on 1080P TV

All that expense to buy a 1080p HDTV to play a Blu-ray movie on a PS3, lets hope it meets your expectations. I think a movie ticket is looking a far better deal considering you will only see that film once.

you will only see that film once? Wait, this isn't the Microsoft xbox HD-rental service we are talking about. ;)

I would MUCH rather have a night-in in the comfort of my own house than spend 50 bucks in theater with some idiots talking and laughing right in front of me.

Also, I didn't know that the only reason people buy a HD-TV is to watch Blu-Ray.. I must be missing something here.

I use to have a 1080i big(CRT) TV and the blu ray looked same as dvd to me,,

But  last night I watched a blu ray on my new TV(Sony 46XBR4)and I gotta say woww,,,

I am actually impressed with the amount of details in the movie.(sometimes it is so real that you fell you are watching an HD documentary)Colours are also impressive.so vibrant.

I watched a movie called Brave one.It didn't have crazy visual effects but I easily could see the difference with the DVD.

All of my family enjoyed the quality, even my mom said wow and she's not into high tech stuff.

 My conclusion:

TV makes worlds of difference

Blu ray movie impressed me

I agree completely.  I didn't think that HD made much of a difference until I truly witnessed it hooked up right on a good tv.  Lol, when I first got my ps3, I had it hooked up with S-video cable to a SD tv....thought it was just fine and there was no need for HD.

I was a fool.  I took my ps3 over to a buddies house.  He had a 60" Sony SXRD 1080p and 5.1 surround sound.  He hooked up my ps3 with HDMI, and we watched a blu-ray.  I was honestly AMAZED.  I bought an HDMI cable and the exact same tv, one week later--I'll buy the stereo later this year.

It was worth every damn penny--and more.

Even the movie theatre doesn't rival the experience...especially when you take into account the little kid crying behind you, or the seven foot ogre sitting in front of you, or the sick person sitting beside you hacking on your popcorn.  Lol, I hate movie theaters...too many damn annoying strangers that I hate :)

HD movies are definitely better. But not worth the price of admission for me yet. I do occasionally download HD rips online and then we run them onto my friend's 720p TV with an HDMI cable off a laptop. They look better, but they're not 1080p, and it's a hassle. We're usually good with 480p DVDs, especially since they won't have artifacting like even most HD rips have.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

"1080i>1080p shouldn't be that much of a difference, far less than 480p>1080i, unless you had a superb upscaler. "

He had an CRT 1080i. HD CRTs simply suck (yes I know better colors yada yada), doesn't have anything to do with the resolution.

crts are actually better in pretty much every way the problem is that they are large (not flat panel) and they don't make them bigger than 36"

and u aren't gonna notice as much of a difference on a <37" tv as you will on a 50+" tv

but same-size crt picture is better than lcds in pretty much every way

I had a 32" 720p/1080i Samsung and both HD DVD and Bluray looks better on that than on my 1080p 52" Sharp. It depends how far back you are really watching the movie I think. :) I think there's a chart on TV distance and 1080pvs720p and at what distance you see the difference.

Currently loving my Wii x2, Xbox 360 Pro & Xbox 360 Arcade, and Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children Limited "Cloud Black" 160GB PS3

Yeah, 1080i-only CRT televisions aren't that much different from 480p/480i CRTs. Their effective resolution is much closer to 960*540 (though I don't think most are even that good) than 1920x1080. There's a reason those 1080i-only televisions can't accept a 720p signal.

Thankfully, they're no longer in production and they're slowly being replaced in most homes. I think anyone with an actual HDTV (even if it's only 720p/1080i) can easily see the difference in Blu-ray.

Actually most movie theaters look worse than a Blu-Ray does on a nice TV because they have been dragging their feet on switching from digital to analog projectors, even in bigger cities.  I am a self-proclaimed movie lover, so I really pay attention to this and go to a lot of theaters and watch a lot of Blu-Rays.

I agree with you when  you are talking about theaters with digital projectors, but the one's with the older projectors look like garbage compared to Blu-Rays.  I would say about 25% of theaters have taken the plunge and changed.

1080p to 1080i is a HUGE difference. Don't believe me? Go to the store and look at the TV sets they have. You can even ask them to change the resolution for you. You can really see it during the fast-paced scenes. Newer TV's are getting better and better at making 1080p signals look phenomenal.

And anyone looking to buy an HDTV, a tip from me. Look that it is 100Hz, it makes a world of difference in all situations and especially in SD...
