Forums - Sony - IGN gave Crisis Core a 8.5

I wonder if they just don't bother having anyone experienced covering PSP anymore, 'cause that review was very oddly written and poorly broken down. I hate it when scores don't match the descriptions.

also.. less than 2 minutes of video review? Wow, I haven't seen a video review that short since... Ninjabread man video review. They clearly didn't bother putting much effort into doing it.

OkeyDokey, I loved FFIII for DS and I would give it a perfect 10 in lasting appeal, and probably a 9 for Crisis Core.. as repetitive as the MIssions are, there are 300 of them and some of them are to get additional summons.

Crisis Core makes me want a PSP :(

Nice score. Gratz PSP owners.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I think with RPG's the score for lasting appeal is held to a higher standard than certain other genres. 20 hours is kind of trim for an FF game I guess.

FF III on the ds was 60 hours+.

more like 20-40 hours. I have NO idea what you did in there to last you 60 hours, Unless you go and talk to everyone twice and then some.

Actually, never played it. I just looked at the IGN review :P

Then IGN must be retarded, i went and talked to everyone twice and dicked around alot and it took me under 40hours.

Is the same score to Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, is a good score.

With the possible exception of some dedicated RPG sites like RPGamer, I've given up reading reviews of JRPGs. The majority of western game reviewers just don't seem to get JRPGs. The FF series has faired pretty well with reviewers, but even then, as illustrated here, they tend to complain about the same things over and over when what they are complaining about is often a core element of the genre and/or what attracts people to the game(s) in the first place.

Too much grinding, too linear, battle system isn't "innovative" enough, cliche graphics, too many cut scenes, cut scenes are too long, battles are too long/slow... reviewers pull out the same tired complaints all the time, or just randomly give low scores when it's clear they simply just aren't fans of the genre. It's like reviewing an FPS and saying there's too much violence and the first person view is disorienting--it's just stupid.

Anyway, I say just ignore reviews of JRPGs till people start hiring reviewers that actually like JRPGs.

I've reached this conclusion as well. Reviews are basically useless to me. Be thankful this is a Final Fantasy title because if its not titled Final Fantasy, western reviewers will penalize it.

Don't trust magazine reviews to help decide purchase. Ask someone you know who has played the game (one who bought the game without thinking of reviews).

Many years ago, reviewers have given FF8 a very high score. But now it's almost universally hated (the emo cast of characters, the "Draw" thing).

Good games stand the test of time. So 8.5 might be "low" but it's better than getting a 9.5 or 10 and then it gets hated 5 years from now (I'm looking at you FF8).

Also, some games that get low scores may end up good for you. I played Shining Force EXA for the PS2, and I enjoyed it. Ditto for Trauma Center for the Wii (I really loved the game, which ironically doesn't have motion control in it).

Proud member of the Sonic Support Squad.

if you're gonna look at the meta critic average it's already 8.1 i think. Well who cares another game to play for my psp.

And they gave God of War a 9.something! So much for rewarding originality...

Squall's emo bit can be a bit anoying but the draw thing was actually a plus for me in FF8. The big thing I didn't like was that enemies were scaled to the average of your parties level. This was alright for early in the game but it discouraged you to explore and stuff because you were only going to make bosses later in the game that much harder to beat by giving them a lot more life because you had more life. So your options were try to beat game with low level and be wiped out by one strong blow or level up and hope you can take down the hundreds of thousands of hp that the bosses had.

edit:  Yeah, 8.5 was lower than I was expecting for this game, if it really is ~20 hours long for the story and "hundreds of sidequests" that should automatically start the score at a 9.0 because of the shear amount of stuff they were able to put into a psp game with great graphics still.  Anyways, going to get the special shiny version from best buy the day it comes out or shortly after.
