Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft Will Focus Primarily On Xbox Live Usership, Not Console Shipments

Wait a sec, those 39 million active accounts are gold + silver, while you can make as many alternate non paying accounts as you want? (Since you only need 1 gold subscription per household)

Now it wouldn't surprise if that 66% increase in gaming revenue, driving by Minecraft, also includes all the Minecraft merchandise...

39 million are Gold and Silver for PC, Xbone, 360 and Phones.

On Topic:

Well now that Microsoft and Sony are becoming more and more vague with their per unit sales, and NPD becoming more and more exclusive with its information... VGChartz is actually in a great position to be successful. Surely this means a resurgence in its dedication to deliver numbers! Surely!

Sony vague?

They are more open to shrare numbers this gen then previous ones... both sold thought and shipped.

unless on psn you don't need more than one account to visit different region store etc.
but that 39 are ofc not gold member

for comparison:
psn has something like 120 million + total accounts and 65m active monthly

and yes, that minecraft merchandise is also included.
what do you think, where they put halo mechandise the last 10 years? into theire windows or commercial divisions? dont even report and doing balance manipulation? doenst make sense.
it's first party revenue

I haven't seen a new PS3 in shops here for months now.

Pretty soon you can assume that >98% of sales/shipping numbers are actual PS4 sales/ship numbers. Same for XBox numbers.

Not for the losing products, for winning products they are.

i would not go with 98%, but it does not matter for sony or ms, if last gen shipmets are 200k or 400k a quarter right now
both is negatable. both will be discontinued early / mid next year. this holiday season is the last push for last gen.
so if they proceed theire final shipment between q1 and q3 in 2016, the next holiday season will be stockclearance for the leftovers.
and after that in 2017 only the used market and legacy edtion "new" games like fifa will still exist

ps3 will be the first sony homeconsole with no legs...

To comment on the news itself...

Hardware numbers in total dont really matter as long as the hardware itself is popular enough to sustain a strong userbase when it comes to the key factor in videogames, which is the software. While Microsoft and 3rd party publishers/developers make money putting games on Xbox, Microsoft will continue to support the Xbox platform. With a bigger focus on digital games in the coming years, a remodelled Xbox One and theyre gonna be making a fuckton of money from Xbox and Xbox Live.

While games are still selling 2, 3, 4 Million copies on Xbox One at retail alone without taking into account DD sales, developers will continue to support the platform and it will continue to be a worthwhile venture for Microsoft.

Thank you. You said it best.

Frankly, giving sales numbers to the public isn't a big of a deal for a company like MS. I am pretty sure it won't hinder them or propel them. Xbox division is large enough to justify its existence as a part of a much bigger company. That's all there is to know. If it ever becomes too small, we'll all know. I find the outrage in this thread amusing though. No one gave two shits outside of videogames sales forums.

Makes sense stated like that. So basically we know nothing after those numbers, just that total revenue is up :/

Not that Sony is any better, no clue how many ps+ subscriptions there are nor how many digital games are sold through psn.

that's why they call it first party revenue (all revenue related to their first party ips) apposed to third and second party royalties in the sec fillings
game sales and dlc stuff from minecraft is ofc the biggest part. not sure how much they made of merchandise. maybe mojang mad a breakdown previously

Too many people here taking the CRAZY pills. There is no correlation between how MS details their earnings and how MS plans to deal with XBox itself long term. Like many companies, MS groups a number of their divisions together for internal and external reporting. Because MS is reorganizing as a company, this only makes sense.

The reason MS is skipping talking about individual product sales is real simple... They truly aren't focused on that. THey have made it clear that they want a single ecosystem on all of their devices - Windows 10. So, the only real measure for that is Xbox Live useage. When people mention that MS will not ever overtake Steam, I just laugh. Steam doesn't provide you with anything other than a convenient place to buy mostly older PC games at a discount and even then, it is based on DRM. The whole point behind Win10 is to get people on the MS ecosystem. Why would anybody truly go over to Steam if the same game at the same price was available in the WIn10 app store? Loyalty? Yeah right, there is no such thing.

MS will build the Win10 app store up slowly through the mass market adoption of Win10. Do gamers have to delete their Steam accounts? NO. But, just like people have accounts with Apple or Google or MS or Steam, they will have them in multiple places. Over time, there will be less and less need to go to Steam and then it will slowly shrink. It probably will not go away and we should hope it doesn't as it will keep MS honest in their app store.

It is near the end of the end....
