Maybe, but I don't think so because any official NX information can have effect on holiday season. |
It can affect whether they get the much needed fDARS bump from their supply-chain. I see it as indespensible.

I still think that there is some chances that the all-AMD solution for Ninty could be an APU with multicore ARM CPU (beefed up from what we currently see on mobiles, but smaller and with lower power consumption than an x86, and slightly more powerful than PS4 and XBOne CPUs) and Radeon GPU, also slightly more powerful than competing ones. RAM could be 8 or 16GB DDR4 main RAM (larger choice if they want NX to get ports as easy as possible from the next competing 9th gen console) plus 2 to 4GB video RAM, 8GB would really surprise me. Video RAM tech could be HBM, to squeeze more performance out of a relatively low-level GPU (that would be anyway stronger than those on any 8th gen console). So I expect a prudent performance leap from 8th gen, but not as prudent as Wii U was from 7th gen, and Ninty will avoid any dangerous shortcomings: competitor 9th gen console will launch later and will obviously be stronger, but not by a measure so large to make ports from the stronger to the weaker too difficult. Using the latest memory tech could do the trick for NX, just like GDDR5 did it for PS4, squeezing the most out of a relatively cheap APU, keeping the price low without disappointing with performances.

Actually Nintendo will follow Iwata vision and plans, but those pretty different plans in comparison with last 2 gens, those plans include Amiibo, mobile games, theme parks, unifying platforms...that doesn't mean they will releasing very strong hardware but I think they will not release any more super weak hardware, it will be more on pair with competitors. |
I know what they have said but what they say can change and also, alot of times, companies play their cards close to their chest. Again, it wouldn't shock me to find out that some of their plans have changed from his initial vision.

Nintendo consoles are pretty much always unique because Nintendo makes radically different types of games from Sony/MS. Besides really at this point how many gimmicks can realistically a company come up with that really change the game play in a fundamental fashion? A robot console? Sex console? VR console (wait Sony and MS already are supporting that)? Console for pets? Console for senior citizens? |
The genesis and the SNES had their very own personality and I'm not talking about some dumbass gimmicks. The hardware was very very different with each console using their own soundchip and graphics chip. That's why you could always tell if a game was running on SNES or Genesis, even without knowing so beforehand. It just had it's own style. The same was true for the NES with it's 5 sound channels that could only be used for certain wavelenghts. The C64 could use only 3 sound channels, but with any wave you wanted. The result were very different soundtracks. (Yeah, yeah, the C64 wasn't a console, but you get the whole idea). Then there were the graphics. The NES could use a shitload of sprites, but they were all tiny and small while other systems could use less sprites but bigger ones. It all resulted in that very own personality of the consoles back in the days. Developers still had to be creative to use the hardware to the fullest and they needed to understand each system individually. Another example would be the terrible Aliasing on PS1 and PS2 compared to the smooth but foggy graphics on the N64. There are countless examples.
Today you just get customized PCs with every system using mostly the exact same parts, just with different steppings and whatnot. The games may have another resolution on this or that console or run with less FPS, but overall, they just feel exactly the same. And that's boring. I couldn't care less about gimmicks, that's not what gives a console personality. It's a unique concept together with customized hardware that really brings what console gaming is all about. I just think it's rather sad that it's nowadays nothing more than PC gaming with some excklusive titles. Really, it's just boring.
