But you're only proving me right. One example I'll hand-pick, bolded:

What motive would he have to fill the court system with petty offenders? If you trace it back, the motive is to increase security for the good of Canada, but the result is counter-productive.

Which just serves to further my point. There are rarely any evil intentions, only evil results. The best example is the curbing of civil liberties due to the perceived need for greater security.

I think we actually agree and no I'm not naive, though I understand why you would think that.

Well, I can't speak for Canadian policies, but in the US Petty offenders are a gold-mine to the privatized prison industry.

Different system, different rates, our rate is like 100 out 100,000, while USA is like 900 out 100,000.

Yeah, I wasn't saying they were the same, was simply pointing out how a Government can make policies that damage the populace but line the pockets of specific industries.

Disgusting to know that people in such high positions say these things, but to be fair, it's pretty difficult to find actual information about GamerGate since the Wiki-article has been heavily co-opted and journalists aren't very keen on writing about themselves being corrupt.

As an artist, I respectfully disagree with you that video games fall under the umbrella of art.

If writing is an art form... if story telling... is an art form... then a video game based on story and writing is, art. I didn't play FFX because of it's twitch gameplay. I played it to find out what happened to Tidus. It moved me, and millions of other people emotionally far beyond "push x really fast and beat bad guys up".

Remember that Japanese commercial for the PS3 remake? Where it's nothing but the music of the game and people crying? Some games do fall under the same umbrella of art. Not all, but some. There is no difference in a good movie, song or game.

Just because something has a story doesn't mean it's art.  Period.

EDIT: FFX SUCKS! Imho.

On the contrary: as a person in a position of power, it behooves him to get educated on a subject before spouting off about it in a public forum. I get the impression he knows about as much about the subject as I do, but where that leads me to largely keep mum about it, he decides to include it in one of his first addreses as head of state. Of course, this assumes his understanding of the topic is actually limited.

He's the new prime minister of a country, is it realistic to expect him to know the ins and outs of a topic neither you nor I, hands deep in the gaming world, have a complete idea about?

If he decides to speak about it publicly? Yes. Opinion leaders have a big forum and lots of influence: their ignorant remarks have caused such headaches as the spread of the anti-vaccine movement, among other inaccurate and harmful causes. I sincerely doubt this particular one off will have as negative a set of consequences, but my point remains: if you know people are going to listen to you, you have the responsibility to first know what you're talking about.

Edit: I'm reminded of the time I went book burning with some priests. One was the head of a Church and confided in me that he was an atheist that despised organized religion. We piled up all manner of bible, lit it all on fire and watched it burn through the night. The fools that attend their Church didn't have a damn clue that the men who preached to them hated their faith. Your greatest enemy is often the man who shakes your hand while offerening a smile which seems so sincere.

The purpose of burning those books was what? Was it some kind of ritual?

To destroy religious records and bibles because they hate the religion, the church and the bible itself. I had a lovely evening that ended with a bonfire in their yard, they just happened to have piles of bibles for this specific purpose.

Always remember that your greatest enemy will always appear to you as a friend, as a leader for you to support and defend.

Tell that to Yoshi. He's been on the wrong end of the Egg laying for over two decades.

I hardly think there is a serious issue with women in the video gaming community or games themselves today

we have tons of series that have popped up for decades with female heroes who were strong and saved the day. from Laura Craft in Tomb Raider, to Sheik/Zelda in The Legend of Zelda, to plenty of others

sure there are examples of sexualized women in games and princesses acitng as damsels in distress, but let's not kid ourselves- those are to some degree reflections of reality in some cases and not that absurd

there are plenty of games with male characters sexualized and constantly without their shirts on or whatever, and plenty of games in which the protagonist (male OR female) has to help a totally helpless male NPC

in terms of the community online and females- get OVER it! it's the internet! if a woman is getting a bit more attention while playing a male dominated online game it's not the end of the world. from my experience most of the time it will be a positive attention, where people are talking to them and trying to aid them in-game simply because they aren't coming across a lot of active female players

in terms of the harassment to Zoe and Anita (the feminist gaming activists), as many know those two simply are in it for a cash in. they have been pictured owning many games that they have labeled as 'sexist' or 'overly violent' and seem to have only recently become major gamers. the only reason gamers have given them crap online is because of the BS spewed out by those two.

in the end though I would consider video games a form of art, and the concept that they should be censored as to not offend anyone is absurd. like 99% of any entertainment out there contains SOMETHING that could offend someone. and in terms of people talking crap to feminist leaders online- guess what, its the internet, people are fairly free to voice their opinions. it would be one thing if it was a one sided conversation with gamers yelling at the GamerGate feminist crowd but it's not, it's going both ways because it has been an ongoing discussion

I will mention that the Canadian Prime Minister seems to be talking about enterainment as a whole a lot in that article, especially music, so I don't know how personal they are going after video games in particular

But, to the point of self-harm? When does the recrimination turn into blasphemy? I worry all sides are getting too sparse. We need a re-education about the orthogonal structure of hegemony.

People will hate on christendom for things like censorship in the past, but it's okay nowadays to find some creepy pleasure in burning bibles. Go humanity!

It has less to do with "cencorship in the past" and more to do with Christian movements such as Nazism. Do you honestly think that censorship is the crime that people are concerned with and not their fostering of white supremacy, fascism, torture, child molestation, war and terrorism? Do you actually think that these organizations are innocent of any serious wrongdoing? We are talking about the most widespread force for "evil" the world has ever seen and one that continues to undermine civil liberties and foster hatred. Sorry but you really are naive if you think that the Churches are a positive force that people hate for "cencorship in the past"... I mean really, that's the motive you made up for our actions, really? I participate in the undermining of Churches because they dehumanized me as a child, they are connected to nearly every white supremacist in the damn province and they make a fortune off of spreading their disgusting values. Do not pretend to understand my actions or motives and do not make up explanations.
