Forums - Gaming - Will industry pros in the future refer to the PS2 as both a 6 & 7 gen sys?

Since the PS2 has lasted since 2000 and is selling extraordinarily well in the 7th gen in 2008, will game industry professionals and journalists, say 10+ years from now refer to the PS2 as a dual gen system.  Does this system application (long lifespans and future readiness) as Sony is known for need to be applied to all systems and gens for the future, 8th, 9th, 10th, etc.???

I think it would be more accurate to just refer to it as a sixth gen system that played with the big boys of the seventh gen

prob. not - everybody knows that the PS3 is the "real" 7th gen. . Having solid sales for a few years overlapping wouldn't make it count as the next gen

Snes still sold well after ps1 was launched, ps1 still sold well after ps2 was launched, GBA still sold well after DS was launched, so I think nop.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

In the strictest sense, it is a sixth generation console and can be nothing more. However, it is selling just as well or better than "current" systems so some will consider it part of the seventh gen, perhaps rightfully so. All I know is, the PS2 will haunt you all in your dreams, muahahaha! j/k. or am i

No.  Mostly because "industry pros" are a figment of your imagination but also because the PS2 is not 7th gen.

Every generation leader sold well into the next generation.
NES
SNES
PS1
PS2
and eventually Wii.

no i dont think they will call it like that

it will always be classified as 6th gen.

I don't get why people are so suprised it is selling this well. Its intent was a 10 year console, its got 20% of its life still left.

Its the best bang for your buck right now too.

I do really think the wii is helping sell PS2s. The casual gamers want to play some more hardcore games and what do they go out and get, a PS2. Its the cheapest and has the best library.

PS2/Wii games are definitely helping the PS2 stay alive...
