Forums - Nintendo - UPDATE - Nintendo Begins Distributing Software Kit for New NX Platform

Question is back to where?
They could be joining Gen 8, 3 years late, or Gen 8.5 a few years early. Either way is a risky endevor. And how well the NX does will be based on a lot of different factors that we don't know about yet.

I think the NX will be trans-generational, and I think this is the last real traditional console generation anyway, so the semantics of its place in the generation are pretty inconsequetial, if you ask me. The NX's success will be based on a lot of things, but none of those things will be a PS5 or XB2 coming out too soon.

Or at all.

PS Now and Win10 FTW.

Programmed on PC and then ported to PS4/Xbox ONE since they are so similar in hardware was surely possible during that timeframe. Since both SONY and Microsoft asked the major publishers what they would like to have in their respective future consoles, it's very likely they knew what to come, just not exactly how powerful they would end up. Otherwise they would only have had a few months for all the programming, which is just not nearly enough for an entire game.

It is when its a port from weaker hardware, which they all were.

Back to another Half Gen?

Im sick about Nintendo releasing consoles in the middle of an on going generation.

They either future proof the NX, so when the Ps5 and Xbox 2(?) are announced, they wont dwarf it with their specs, or they embrace the "we dont compete directly with Sony and Microsoft" and release a console with whatever specs.

When was the last time Nintendo done this?

The Wii U was released 6 years after the PS3/7 years after the 360. Its specs were not even uniformly better then those consoles and were the furthest thing away from "industry leading".

Nintendo have never taken a mid gen tactic before, running circles around the current generation of platforms (say all third party games are 60fps/1080p+higher graphical settings)whilst they're still relatively young maybe what Nintendo needs to get a foothold in the core market again. Seeing as most people on this forum don't believe we'll see a successor to either PS4/X1 for a while, Nintendo do not necessarily need to worry about being dwarfed by anything. Comparably the PS4 was announced 3 months after the Wii U came out...

I don't feel this is the ideal tactic but it could still work for them. Ideally they would wait til fall 2017 for the home console and present a console that feels next gen compared to PS4/X1 just as they begin their decline.

if they are just beginning to distribute dev kits and actually launch next year then shitty 3rd party support is already confirmed. less than a year to ready your games is not enough.

Actually, 1 year before launch for third party dev kits is quite far ahead of what is typical, it's usually under 6 months. PS4 dev kits were only reported going out just a few months ahead of launch, for comparison's sake.

untrue as fuck.  we already had the full specs of the ps4 dev kit leaked to the internet at over a year out from launch.

http://www.techradar.com/us/news/gaming/consoles/rumor-massively-powerful-ps4-dev-kit-is-out-1109677

i mean c'mon man,.  the ps4 reveal was feb 20 a full 9 months before release and third party games like the witness and deep down where shown off already at the reveal.  at the reveal the games where already shown.  jonathan blow went on record saying the only reason the witness was announced as a ps4 exclusive  at the reveal (reminder: feb 20th 2013) was because sony was the only one willing to give his team a development kit.  clearly the "just a few months" statement is wrong.  ..just wrong.

Those dev kits are coming in too late for a 2016 release. Sure the ps4 ones came months before, but if people remember, the only third party the ps4 had on launch were ports. It's biggest releases (killzone, infamous) were all first party. The NX can't afford to have a delayed launch, otherwise it will fail to take momentum from the ps4 and will enter the same fate as the wii u

PS4 and X1 dev kits were in my company's hands about 9-10 months before launch.

Mind backing that statement up? Nintendo has never done this before, so I'm curious where you perceive this to be happening so much that you're sick of it.

Well, the biggest hardware pushers are going to be first parties. Nintendo won't allow another WiiU-like launch: they caught off guard on the HD front and trusting only on 3rd parties to carry the console. Nintendo will have (they probably already have) all the games of the first year done or almost finished.

You know it deserves the GOTY.
