Forums - Sony - How PS4 backwards compatibility could make Sony alot of money...

Yes, Sony would likely sell a lot more consoles but developers would sell a lot less next gen games. If people can just play their old library for weeks on end then it's less likely they'll buy new games just for something to play.

That and they could no longer get away with selling PS3 "remasters". I mean, sure they can, but the sales would probably be far less.

I agree with your point but not the way it's framed.

The PS5 Exists.

PS3 is the proof

So you have conjecture.

Truthfully not many people here are qualified to speak on the matter. But I think it could be possible.

It isn't. Well, it is but not as reasonable speeds. You have to emulate 6 cell cores which match the six cores from the jaguar available on PS4. The Cell itself is still faster or let's say at the same speed. So emulation would have to 1:1 in terms of speed which is impossible. Than you have to emulate the PPC core on another core of the jaguar which is not even fast enough to emulate a cell core so the no time left would have to emulate the PPC core.

So just from the CPU point of view, it is not possible.

Add PSV, PSP, PSX, and PS2.

Then you can say the biggest backwards compatibility collection of all time.

PS3 is technically impossible, it's time to move on to things that are possible. They can have their cake and eat it too this way.

As a software engineer myself,i can't see how Sony should manage to emulate the PS3. The Cell is quite complex. I highly doubt it's possible.

PC says hi

That deserves the obligatory:

eWell if they released backwards compatibility.. I would sell my PS3, and purchase 3 PS4 games!!!!

No you wouldn't, you'd buy Twilight Princess HD and Amiibos.

I can personally care less about BC. Last gen on the PS3, I had it. I only used the BC for about 2-3 months, until i had enough PS3 games to keep me busy, then i never touched it again.

i think I've played enough PS3 games already and I have a PS3. The PS4 being BC with the PS3 is redundant and makes no sense. The Xbox one has very limited BC and the wii u has full BC but yet the console without any BC except for PSN games is outselling them by 2 to 1. Honestly, I wouldn't mind if the PS4 was BC with the PS1 and PS2 though but still, I don't buy next gen consoles to play old games. Sony only needs to keep doing what it's been doing with the PS4.

are you qualified or is that more conjecture?

There is no way PS3 is ever nativley compatible on PS4, PS4 CPU doesnt have anywhere near enough power to emulate the cell.

Thankfully now that consoles are just PC's, this issue will more than likely never arrise in the future again, BC should be very straightforward for future consoles.
