I don't think I could ever consider a surprise release of anything to be a masterplan.

I don't know, so far it's always seemed like a bad idea to anounce "And guess what, it's out now!", didn't really work for Entwined or D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die but then again No Man's Sky has had it's fair share of media coverage compared to those two games, so it might not matter. In any case I'll be to busy with Halo 5 for that release date but I'm really looking forward to No Man's Sky :D

This game can be big (in a physical sense, noone is saying the game world isn't reasonably sizable), but to do that it needs to be marketed well and a surprise announcement ain't that. |
The game has gotten more than enough coverage for a surprise release to be effective. Again, I think its genius and that it would work.
While it would get a load of media coverage if it was announced at a major gaming event, I'm unsure as to wether it's a good idea....
If I were them, I'd announce the date on PSX, and have it release the 18th of december. That way, after people have seen the 7th Star Wars movie, and really would like some space-y action, they could buy No Man's Sky and be set for christmas.

I'm not that sure that will sell phenomenally well. After watching many videos and stuff , I'm still not quite sure what you have to do in the game. OK, you get on your ship, discover planets and animals and... Is there a history mode or at the least missions you have to complete?
It looks cools, but It's not a easy sell. It will probably do OK.
Release date will be at Paris Game Week, that I can agree on however Argos in the UK has it for pre-order on disc, I thought it was going to be a download only game and not only that they have it for £50.
Hmm, pie.

There's no "mode" or missions. I'm sure there's plenty of lore or backstory in the game. Everything's intertwinned together. They're being secretive about the story for the most part. All we know is that we're trying to get to the center of the galaxy but it will require you get more resources and better ships/gear to do so.
There's alot of interviews that explain various aspects of the game on youtube. It's really cool and informative to watch 'em though. I'm sure they'll be releasing a ton of info to hook people.

Nope, just rumour. November or December atleast. It's a very big game, i mean this game is very huge, it could potentially as big as Minecraft. Def my most antictipated game of this year, behind only Fallout 4.
