I think the Xbox One's still got a shot at taking October, but that does largely depend on how many pre-ordered bundles are going to get redeemed and picked up come Halo 5's release day. Even if, as some have suggested, the game's lost a bit of its console-selling luster/most who want it already have an Xbox One, there is probably going to still be a bigger Day One boost than there's been for nearly any other single Xbox One bundle thus far. It's got the long-developed fanbase and hype and, unlike Titanfall or previous CoD bundles for example, there's no PC or 360 release to spread out the fanbase. (Though again, only my opinion.)
That being said, props to Sony for the go-getter approach! People kept wondering if a price drop would have been announced at the end of this month, but I think they knew that announcing and implementing a price drop that late in October would drastically reduce the chances of it actually helping them WIN October. Having it go down this early on is going to let them spend the next few weeks building up a good head of steam while taking full advantage of the initial rush of post-pricecut sales, widening the gap with the Xbox One as much as humanly possible to maximize the odds that Halo 5 won't let Microsoft catch up.
It's quite interesting, October's NPD will definitely be one of the most interesting to date. =O
