Forums - Sales - Over the long term, Sony is in a tough spot

How will things pan out?

MS will get USA, Nintendo will get Japan 41 19.52%

Sony strong with global strength 168 80.00%

Total:209

That is the major weakness of Nintendo and MS. MS can't appeal to japanese audiences with its Xbox consoles, japanese 3rd parties choose Nintendo and Sony. Nintendo can't appeal to western audiences, western 3rd parties choose Sony and Microsoft.

Sony wins both, this gen they have not been aggressive so far. Last gen they messed up hard and they went aggressive and managed a 30% share.

Actually, I think (and any residents of Japan, please feel free to correct me), MS had a chance in Japan, but blew it in the 360 years by claiming X really popular japanese title was exclusive, and then said title releasing on the PS3 at some point later w/ added polish/content.  I seem to recall that really bothering some folks there and it lost Microsoft a great deal of respect/cred in that region.

Plus, Japan's been less home console-centric for quite some time now, so that's not helping matters any, either.

Wii U sold 2.5 million according to vgchartz in like... 3 years?

PS4 sold 1.6 million in... 2 years?

Totally irrelevant, that's like 1 black friday lol.

Home consoles are dead in Japan, so fucking sad.

As of the last Media Create chart release(this week), Wii U is at 2.6 while PS4 is at 1.8.

http://www.dualshockers.com/2015/10/08/ps4-sales-in-japan-overtake-1-8-million-units-after-price-cut-wii-u-reaches-2-6-million/

As for the topic, with the numerous games the PS4 has coming next year in Japan. I can see the PS4 being able to pass the Wii U in late 2016 - early 2017. Plus, we have to consider the NX, if it is indeed the successor to the Wii U. In NA, Sony is going to reclaim what they had since the PS1 and 2 days. I don't see Sony dropping the ball later this gen. As for worldwide, obviously Sony's.

It was always doing bad comparatively speaking. 360 and XB did about 2% of its LTD sales from japan. PS3 got 12% of its LTD from japan.

The chance was to only be niche, even now XB1 selling 100 each week is probably due to a deal MS made with retailers. (shelf space)

And of course Nintendo had a chance with western 3rd parties with the GCN then the PS2 happened.

Almost 4 generation in and the worst ps console sold more than 80m. I dont see how they will be in a tough spot. They have enough reliable fanbase to ride a generation. They just have to make sure that its a console that make financial sense. Also if last gen is anything to go by, xbox success depends hugely of sony mistakes including a price difference of at least 100.

I think Sony is strong everywhere. It just doesn't dominate in any single region the way MS does in North America. Conversely, MS is weak everywhere else. As for Nintendo, I have no specific comments, their performance has been really unstable in the long run.

RROD also didn't help. I doubt they would be as forgiving as the americans

1st pricecut after 2 years is not aggressive.

And as many MS and Nintendo fans like to say, Sony 1st party has no big hitters yet.

Many even put the blame on Nintendo and MS for doing so bad and that its not through Sonys smart planning that they are winning.

Not to mention the Vita with nothing being pushed.

This thread is really not needed. The only one that could beat Sony in console market is Sony.
