Nintendo gives indie devs something they can actually profit off: amiibo.

Well that's also a good examples from Nintendo, but bad argument from you because we are discusing a topic about Physical Media.  I hope you can create a new thread out side this thread

"Physical media refers to the physical materials that are used to transmit information in data communications."

Amiibo technically qualifies.

I am sorry if maybe i am not qualified enough to answer this, but i will ask you, can i play Nintendo 3DS or Nintendo Wii U without Amiibo?

You can play your PS4 as well without physical media. What point are you trying to make?

I support digital. Mainly because Steam is the best service for gamers out there and used games sales do nothing but hurt devs and there are a massive amount of cheapskates out there that will wait for the game to be $20 or less at gamestop before buying.

I know this is an old post, but can I just say how much I agree with Marie Antoinette here?

I'm so sick of people saying they can't afford to drop $500 on a new console and $60-$70 for each game (even more if they're European!). What are they, poor? Can't they just get free money from the Bank of Dad like the rest of us do? imo, if you have to wait for discounts or buy things second-hand, you're not a good enough person to play video games. Go play ball in a cup like a Mexican.

People not paying full launch price for everything - which is totally a new thing and certainly hasn't been around for the entire history of gaming - are literally killing the industry. The gaming industry makes barely any profits at all; it's dying just so that it can have a business model where peasants can afford to play. That's wrong.

Then I assume you buy all name brand material at full price. Your shoes, clothing, toys, cars, houses, apartments, insurrence, and food. And never wait for sales. Or buy store brand versions. I assume you avoid Amazon.com. Since they discount the MSRP at the start. Gaming is not isolated from capitalism.

Is it me ooor did things get a little confused here...

No. You were saying everyone who waits for sales on stuff are assholes to companies. And the reason why Games are failing. Then I rebuttled do you buy everything else at full price, no questions asked. Being a knight in shining armor. So to not be the blame of other companies going under too. Why are these pratices bad for Gaming. But not in other areas.

Sony is the most open minded company and they are also developers of physical media while using the digital realm to gain secondary profits.

We talking main media (physical and digital ) not add on, if you talking about Amiibo, you clearly try to derailing the thread. Amiibo function is not to replacing physical nor digital, but it's funtion is to enhanced the experienced that already brought by the main media (Phisical or Digital ) on Wii U and 3DS.

i know i do

OT - the article doesn't make sony pro or anti physical media to me.  litterally the only point is they allow smaller run sizes.  that makes sony sound pro small business which we kind of already know with their big focus on working with indie developers.

Every gen I buy a shitload of Nintendo games. Probably 80-140 of them (At Aus rip off prices). If they go all digital then I will be saying good bye. Most i will never play, just looks cool on my shelf. If they take that away from me then I have no reason to buy.

And I would say that 99% of consumers in any market, not just gaming, are absolutlely nothing like you. Most people don't buy games because "it looks good on theif shelf."

99% of the consumer also only buys liike 2-3 games a generation. It s the 1% that is the hardcore collector that spend $$$$ on games which are limited edition etc. and pay a 20%-50% premium just because it is. Without physical games you have cut out a big revenue sources that pays more.

And that is different than people waiting for the humble bundles on steam?

Spot on, Steam sales too, although there is some money being made, the sales are too good, and often so regular buying has been hurt. Add to that the aggressive price competition in the PC digital space, it's no wonder games like GTA are released years later, or cheaply ported like Arkham knight.

I would probably buy around 50% less full price games (day 1 preorders mostly) if I couldn't sell them on when I've finished. Game publishers know this and actively encourage it. When you see "buy Fallout 4 for £10(or less, it's been £1 before) when you trade in Mad Max or Metal Gear solid 5 "it's almost definitely got backing from a publisher.

There was a really good article about it on Eurogamer, last year I think. It had an ex manager of GAME UK being interviewed.

In short, it's not as straightforward as it seems.

they buy them to play, and playing them when ever they want is a huge part of gaming. Which is not the case if these netwroks are down, shut down completley or if simple your internet stops working for a period of time.
