Spot on, Steam sales too, although there is some money being made, the sales are too good, and often so regular buying has been hurt. Add to that the aggressive price competition in the PC digital space, it's no wonder games like GTA are released years later, or cheaply ported like Arkham knight.
I would probably buy around 50% less full price games (day 1 preorders mostly) if I couldn't sell them on when I've finished. Game publishers know this and actively encourage it. When you see "buy Fallout 4 for £10(or less, it's been £1 before) when you trade in Mad Max or Metal Gear solid 5 "it's almost definitely got backing from a publisher.
There was a really good article about it on Eurogamer, last year I think. It had an ex manager of GAME UK being interviewed.
In short, it's not as straightforward as it seems.
